Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 To Saginaw Valley In Overtime

The Northwood University men's soccer team dropped a hard fought match at Saginaw Valley 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday evening (October 30).

The Timberwolves are now 5-8-1 on the season, 5-7-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals improve to 9-3-4 and 8-2-3 in the GLIAC.

Neither team was able to generate much offense in the first period, with Northwood recording just two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Saginaw Valley maintained the advantage in shots 5-3, as well as an edge in corner kicks 3-2. Both teams went into halftime scoreless.

The second half generated more scoring opportunities for the Cardinals, but Northwood was able to shut them out, sending the match into overtime. Brent Schmid (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) played a crucial role in controlling the play for the Timberwolves. Schmid was also responsible for three of Northwood's six shots in the match.

Northwood's defense, directed by freshman Dominic Hart (Rotherham, England), played a key role in this match. Saginaw Valley was unable to convert on any of their 11 corner kicks or 19 shots taken in regulation. It wasn't until the 96^th minute that a Cardinal shot was deflected within the 18 yard line and beat the keeper.

Northwood will host their final match of the regular season on Sunday (November 3) when they take on Tiffin. Match time is set for 2:35 p.m.
