Men's Soccer Downs Lake Erie 1-0 In Final Minutes

The Northwood University men's soccer team tops Lake Erie 1-0 on Friday afternoon (October 3).

The Timberwolves improve to 5-2-1 on the year, 3-2-1 in the GLIAC. The Storm are now 3-4-1, 2-3-1 in the GLIAC.

The first half saw very few scoring opportunities. With a combined six shots, there were just a single shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Play was extremely competitive with fast play on a slick surface after the weather conditions gave the field a slick layer. The match remained scoreless entering halftime.

The sun came out briefly the start of the second half but did not bring much scoring with it. The match remained 0-0 through 87 minutes until Andrew Nugent (Ipswich, England) netted the game-winner at 88:18. Nugent finished a ball from the left side on a pass from Mayowa Olufeko (Welling, England). Nugent's shot ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

For the match, NU held an advantage in shots (12-4) and corner kicks (4-2). In an extremely physical game, there were a total of 25 fouls and four yellow cards given. Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England / John Hampden) finished with four shots, while Olufeko tallied two shots and an assist on the day.

NU will be home against Ohio Dominican on Sunday (October 5) for Game Show Day. The women kick off at noon with the men to follow. CLICK HERE for the complete 2014 Men's Soccer promotional calendar.
