Men's Soccer Claims GLIAC Tournament Championship With 1-0 Win Over Saginaw Valley

TIFFIN, OHIO - The Northwood University men's soccer team claims the 2014 GLIAC Tournament Championship over Saginaw Valley with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon (November 9) at Tiffin University.

The Timberwolves currently stand at 14-3-1 overall, while Saginaw Valley drops to 13-4-2. NU defeated the Cardinals in the final regular season game 2-1 in extra time (Oct. 31) after playing to a 0-0 draw early on the year (Sept. 12).

As was the case in the previous two meetings this year, neither team was able to generate much offense in the opening period that yielded just three shots. Northwood recorded two corner kicks to Saginaw's one in the first half.

The Timberwolves were able to generate enough offense in the second half to pull ahead 1-0 in the 69th minute. Keaton Levock (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) crossed the ball into junior Adam Thomas (High Wycombe, England / John Hampden) who finished the shot with a header into the back of the net. Northwood allowed just a single Cardinal shot from that point on to secure the win.

For the match, NU held the advantage in shots (7-3) and corner kicks (2-1). There were a total of 24 fouls committed and four cautions issued. Thomas finished with a goal on two shots, while Levock registered two shots and an assist. Joey Censoni (Rochester, Mich. / Adams), James DeCosemo (Stokesley, England) and Dalton Amez (Macomb, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) each tallied a shot in the match. Keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg) had two saves for his ninth shutout of the year.

At the conclusion of today's game, the GLIAC announced the All-Tournament team. Northwood had four players earn such honors: Johannes Sterobo, Julius Sterobo (Odense, Denmark / Tornbjerg), Dominic Hart (Rotherham, England) and Adam Thomas.
