Track Teams Compete At GLIAC Indoor Championships

The Northwood University track and field teams competed at the 2014 GLIAC Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday (March 1 and 2).

This year's event was hosted by Hillsdale College.

The women's team placed 9th overall with 21 points. Grand Valley State was the overall winner with 162 points, followed by Ashland with 138.50. Danielle Miller entered the weekend with the fifth best time in the conference in the 5,000 meter run. After clocking a time of 17:29.14, she took home the medal for first place overall in the event. Miller also earned a 10th place finish in the 3K with a time of 10:06.53. Senior Madison Pines also had a great Championship meet, earning All-Conference in both the 800 and mile. Pines placed third in the mile at 4:59.63 and sixth in the 800 meter clocking 2:16.48. In the pentathlon shot put, Chelsea Young (Remus, Mich. / Chippewa Hills) finished in seventh place with a throw of 9.51 meters.

On the men's side the Timberwolves also placed 12th with 18 points. Grand Valley State was the overall winner with 159 points, Ashland followed with 112.50. Four Timberwolves placed in the top eight at the GLIAC Indoor Championships to earn All-Conference. Wally Clay (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Southwestern) ran a provisionally qualifying time of 22.27 in the 200 to finish fifth. SeniorKorvon Harris (Detroit, Mich. / Northwestern) placed fifth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.93. Enock Rono (Eldoret, Kenya / Universal) clocked a time of 1:54.73 for a seventh place finish in the 800. Marcus Rogers (Howell, Mich. / Pinckney) ran 8:40.70 to place seventh in the 3K. The Northwood 4X400 meter relay team posted an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark and a fourth place finish with a time of 3:20.74. This also earned the team of Jacob Hurrell (Cadillac, Mich.), Rono, Jordan Fields (Lauderhill, Fla. / Blanche Ely) and Clay All-Conference honors. The Distance Medley Relay team of Rono, Brian Grecu (Ovid, Mich. / Ovid-Elsie), Fields and Rogers also posted provisionally qualified mark of 10:17.29 to claim fifth, as well as All-Conference honors.

The NCAA Division II National Championships will be held in Winston Salem, N.C. on March 14 & 15.
