Two NCAA Provisional Marks, Three School Records Lead Northwood At SVSU, GVSU

LOCATION: University Center, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University

RECAP: Mason Phillips broke the 200 meter school record in an NCAA provisional qualifying mark to lead Northwood at SVSU Friday (December 7).

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

• Mason Phillips cruised to his second school record and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of the year. Phillips won the 200 meter dash in an impressive 21.22 seconds, just .01 shy of meeting the NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
• His performance betters the school record that he set at last year's GLIAC Indoor Championships (21.51).
• At the time of this article, his performance also stands as the #1 time in NCAA Division II.
• A pair of sprinters represented Northwood in the finals of the 60 meter dash. Andrew Davis finished seventh in 7.03. Austin Hamlet recorded a time of 7.10 for an eighth place finish.
• Jerralmiar Jones cleared 1.93 meters/6 feet-3.5 inches in the high jump for a fourth place finish in his collegiate debut. The mark ties him for the fifth best performance at NU.
• Hunter Berecz led the throwers with a pair of collegiate PRs in the weight throw and shot put. Berecz finished second in the weight throw (15.68m/51-5.5 inches) and sixth in the shot put (15.01m/49 feet-3 inches). Those marks give him the tenth- and fifth-best performances at NU respectively.
• Also in the throws, Nathan Powers placed fourth (14.86m/48 feet-9 inches) in the weight throw and ninth in shot (13.26m/43 feet-6 inches). Zechariah Stickler recorded a throw of 14.64m/48 feet-0.5 inches to place sixth in his Northwood debut to round out the throws contingent.

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

• The sprint duo of Debra Wallace and Jetaeia Lewis led the women team. Lewis finished second in the 60 meter finals in 7.76 for the fourth fastest time in school history. Wallace finished fourth in 7.78 and improved on her Top 5 performance in history.
• The duo later returned to the track and swept the 200 meter dash. Wallace earned the event win in 25.20, with Lewis right behind in 25.50. Those marks give Wallace and Lewis the third and fourth fastest times in NU history respectively.
• In the high jump, Heaven Powell cleared 1.63m/5 feet-4.25 inches for a third place finish.
• The shot put finals included two Timberwolves. Jessica Marvin led the group with a heave of 11.70m/38 feet-4.75 inches for fifth. Jessica Kursinsky finished right behind Marvin in sixth with a mark of 11.61m/38 feet-1.25 inches.
• Taky Ezell had her collegiate debut for Northwood with a strong mark of 15.37m/50 feet-5.25 inches in the weight throw. She now owns the fourth best performance in school history in the event.
• Hannah Gearhart placed ninth in the finals of the weight throw with a toss of 13.91m/45 feet-7.75 inches.

LOCATION: Allendale, Mich. – Grand Valley State University

RECAP: The distance crew turned in a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and two school records at the GVSU Holiday Open Friday (December 7).

INSIDE THE MEET

• Coming off a strong cross country season, sophomore Brian Patrick opened up his indoor campaign with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 5k. Patrick finished 7th overall in 14:21.88 for a 55 second personal best and shattering the previous school record of 14:48.75 set by Tyler Jensen in 2017.
• The second school record of the day came from freshman Chase Clark in the 1k, who led a trio of Northwood runners under the old school record. Clark clocked a time of 2:30.34 en route to a second place finish. The previous school record was 2:35.96 set by Grant Harris in 2017.
• Junior Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty finished third in the 1k right behind Clark in 2:30.29, while freshman Josiah Morse finished in 2:34.73.

• The track and field teams will resume action following the winter break at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open. The meet is set for January 11, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.
