Heaven Powell's NCAA Provo, School Record In High Jump Leads Track & Field At Conference Crossover

OVERVIEW – CONFERENCE CROSSOVER

MEET: Hillsdale Conference Crossover

LOCATION: Hillsdale College – Hillsdale, Mich.

RECAP: Heaven Powell breaks the high jump school record in an NCAA provisional mark to lead Northwood at Hillsdale College Friday (January 18).

Heaven Powell became the best women's high jumper in Northwood history. Powell posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1.71 meters (5 feet-7.25 inches). This bettered the previous school record of 1.70 meters (5 feet-7 inches) set by Northwood Hall of Famer Julane Thayer in 1985. Thayer's mark was tied for the second-longest standing record in history.

A new lifetime best in the high jump, Powell's previous indoor best was 1.68 meters (5 feet-6 inches) and outdoor best was 1.70 meters.

Her height puts her in a tie for eighth place on the national list, virtually punching her ticket to the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships at Pittsburg State in March. 1.71 meters was tied for tenth on last year's national qualifying list.

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • Hurdler Rami Gharsalli returned to action and had his season debut in the 60 meter hurdles, posting a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.19 seconds in the prelims to lead all runners.

  • Shortly after the 60 dash, Phillips picked up his second win of the day in the long jump. His best jump of the day was on his fifth attempt at 7.03 meters (23 feet-0.75 inches).
  • Sprinter Andrew Davis picked up his first NCAA provisional qualifying mark of his career in the 200 meters. His event-winning time of 22.12 seconds converts down to 21.73 seconds* to surpass the minimum qualifying standard. Davis now ranks sixth in school history in the event.
  • Davis also finished second in the 60 meters in 6.97 seconds – a time that he also posted in the prelims.
  • Christopher Bent claimed second place honors in the 200 meters in 22.82 seconds.
  • The 800 meters saw seven entries compete that were all from Northwood. Josiah Morse won the event in 1:57.53. Parker Hayes placed second in 1:58.22 and Michael Allen crossed the line in 1:58.79 to round out the top three finishers for the Timberwolves.
  • Chase Clark and Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty finish 2-3 in the mile in a tightly contested race. Clark finished second in 4:18.58 and now ranks eighth in school history, while Mancillas-Finnerty right behind in 4:18.99.

UP NEXT

  • The Northwood track & field teams will travel to Saginaw Valley State University Friday-Saturday (January 25-26) for the SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational.

* NOTE: Because the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships will be contested on a 300 meter flat track, a conversion takes place for those times run on a 200 meter flat track. The conversion takes time off of a mark posted on a 200 meter flat track to make it similar to if it was run on a 300 meter flat track because of the track size.
