Track & Field Earns Three NCAA Provos, Two School Records At Hillsdale Wide Track Classic

OVERVIEW – WIDE TRACK CLASSIC

 

MEET: Wide Track Classic

LOCATION: Hillsdale College – Hillsdale, Mich.

RECAP: Three NCAA provisional qualifying marks and two school records lift Northwood track & field to a big weekend at Hillsdale Friday-Saturday (February 1-2) for the Wide Track Classic.

 

DMR SETS NEW STANDARD

The quartet of Chase Clark, Mason Phillips, Netunji Paige and Brian Patrick broke the school record in the distance medley relay, winning the championship heat in 10:02.29 for a new NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Their time is converted to 9:54.22, which is equivalent to the event being contested on a 300 meter track - Hillsdale's track size is a 200 meter flat track. They currently sit seventh on the Division II qualifying list at the time of this recap.

 

The relay team's time on Friday night bested the old standard by 9 seconds before a conversion - the previous school record of 10:11.61 set by Rono, Rogers, Ladner and Williams in 2013.

 

PHILLIPS REBREAKS OWN 60 DASH RECORD

Phillips finished second in the finals of the men's 60 meter dash in 6.73 seconds Saturday afternoon to rebreak his old school record of 6.76 set in December 2018. The time is just .01 shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard and is currently ranked second in Division II.

 

The 60 dash finals also featured Mobolade Ajomale, an eight-time NCAA Division II National Champion from Academy of Art, who won the event in 6.68 for an NCAA automatic standard.

 

In the prelims and semifinals, Phillips cruised to times of 6.85 and 6.82 seconds respectively.

 

LEWIS MEETS PROVISIONAL STANDARD, SETS NEW PERSONAL BESTS

Jetaeia Lewis posted two strong showings in the 60 and 200 meter dashes, both personal bests. Lewis sprinted her way to a second place finish in the 60 dash finals in a NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 7.66 seconds. She ran 7.77 seconds in the prelims on Friday night, while advancing through the semi-finals in a then-personal best time of 7.72 seconds Saturday before the finals.

 

In the championship heat of the 200 meters Friday, she crossed the line in 25.43 seconds for a fifth place finish.

 

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • JaiVen Holmes-Powell picked up a pair of top eight finishes. A time of 9.16 seconds in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles was good for a seventh place finish, while finishing the 400 meters in 53.61 seconds for eighth.
  • The 60 meter dash also saw Andrew Davis earn a fifth place finish in 7.02 seconds. He ran 7.03 seconds in both the prelims and semifinals to advance to finals.
  • Dylan Rocha claimed a win in the championship section of the 3k in 8:39.76, while Caleb Barker finished the open section of the 3k in 9:24.46 for a sixth place finish.
  • Michael Allen placed sixth in the championship section of the mile, finishing in 4:32.16.
  • Northwood's 'B' team DMR of Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty, Davis, Josiah Morse and Parker Hayes crossed the line in 10:33.28 for fifth place.
  • Jerralmiar Jones won the men's high jump with a top clearance of 1.99 meters (6 feet-6.25 inches) to tie his collegiate best in the event.
  • In the shot put, Hunter Berecz placed seventh with a throw of 15.20 meters (49 feet-10.5 inches).

 

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Debra Wallace joined teammate Lewis in the championship section of the 200 meters, earning a fourth place finish with a time of 25.39 seconds.
  • Amanda Aquinaga placed third in the open 800 with a. time of 2:24.08 to move her up to No. 6  in school history.
  • Madi Brooks won the open section of the 3k in a new personal best time of 10:55.06 to move into ninth all-time in school history. Teammate Katherine Wozniak placed seventh in 11:24.96 in her first collegiate indoor 3k.
  • The high jump saw Heaven Powell clear 1.62 meters (5 feet-3.75 inches) to earn a third place finish.
  • In the weight throw, Taky Ezell hit a new lifetime best distance of 16.14 meters (52 feet-11.5 inches) on her final throw of the competition to finish fourth. She now ranks third on NU's all-time performance list.
  • Jessica Kursinsky set a new personal best in the shot put to finish eighth in finals. Her best throw of the day went 12.58 meters (41 feet-3.25 inches) now sits her at second all-time in NU history.

 

UP NEXT

  • The Northwood track & field teams will travel to Saginaw Valley State University Friday-Saturday (January 25-26) for the SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational.

 

 

* NOTE: Because the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships will be contested on a 300 meter flat track, a conversion takes place for those times run on a 200 meter flat track. The conversion takes time off of a mark posted on a 200 meter flat track to make it equivalent to running the contested race on a 300 meter flat track.
