Mason Phillips Picks Up Third GLIAC Men's Track Athlete Of The Week Honor

MIDLAND, MICH. – Sophomore Mason Phillips was named the GLIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week Tuesday (February 5) after breaking two school records and hitting two NCAA provisional standards at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic. This is the third weekly GLIAC honor of the season and career.

Phillips finished second in the 60 meter dash in 6.73 seconds, just shy of hitting the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 6.72 seconds. His time is a new lifetime best and an improvement on his school record of 6.76 seconds set at the Tiffin Alumni Open back in December. Phillips is ranked second in Division II and first in the GLIAC.

He also teamed up with Chase Clark, Netunji Paige and Brian Patrick to break the school record with a NCAA provisional qualifying standard. The quartet won the championship section of the DMR in 10:02.29 and currently ranks them seventh on the national list and first in the GLIAC– a time that converts to 9:54.22 due to track size.

Phillips is also nationally ranked in three other events - first in the 200 meters, No. 11 in the long jump and No. 12 in the 400 meter dash.

The indoor track and field teams will compete at the GVSU Big Meet Friday and Big Meet Saturday (February 8-9).
