Track & Field Concludes Season Opener At Winthrop Invitational

LOCATION: Iwrin Belk Track & Complex – Rock Hill, S.C.

RECAP: The track and field squads concluded their season opener at the adidas Winthrop Invitatonal with three athletes moving into the top ten all-time in school history.

INSIDE THE MEET

For the women, senior Jetaeia Lewis competed in the finals of the 200 meters and placed fifth in 25.07 seconds, an improvement upon her time of 25.31 seconds yesterday. Her seasonal best bumps her up into third all-time in Northwood history.

Senior Riley Johnson got her season underway in the javelin with a mark of 33.81 meters (110 feet-11 inches). In the discus, sophomore Jessica Marvin threw the dicus 39.90 meters (130 feet-11 inches). Her mark this weekend was shy of her personal best of 39.99 meters (131 feet-2 inches) set at last year's GLIAC Championships in May, and over 4 meters farther than her season opener last year at Winthrop.

On the men's side, freshman JaiVen Holmes-Powell moved himself into tenth on NU's all-time performance list with a time of 58.53 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles.

Sophomore Hunter Berecz placed 17th in the hammer throw with a day's best mark of 45.01 meters (147 feet-8 inches) in his season opener. His collegiate best entering this season is 45.75 meters (150 feet-1 inch) set at the Ashland Alumni Meet last season.

Freshman Travis Schepers cracked Northwood's all-time list for the second time this weekend – this time in the discus throw. His mark of 38.56 meters (126 feet-4 inches) places him tenth in school history. Sophomore Nathan Powers posted a mark of 38.21 meters (125 feet-4 inches) for a collegiate best. 

UP NEXT: The track and field squads will split up between the Bellarmine Invitational (Louisville, KY) and Raleigh Relays (Raleigh, NC) Friday-Saturday (March 29-30).
