Track & Field Earns Eleven USTFCCCA All-Region Honors

The Northwood men's and women's track & field teams had five athletes earn a total of eleven U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors, as announced Tuesday afternoon (May 14).

Sophomore Mason Phillips accounted for four All-Region honors himself to lead the men's honorees. He is ranked second in the 100 meters with his time of 10.34 seconds achieved at Mount Olive on Sunday. He is also ranked third in the 200 (20.97 seconds) and fifth in the long jump (7.08 meters/23 feet-2.75 inches). Phillips is also part of the 4x100 meter relay team that is ranked second (40.57 seconds).

In all, Phillips has earned eight All-Region honors outdoors and sixteen total in his first two years at Northwood.

Senior Rami Gharsalli earned All-Region honors in the 110 meter hurdles, javelin, and 4x100 meter relay. His time of 13.92 seconds in the 110 hurdles at Mount Olive this past Sunday leads the Midwest region and is ranked second nationally. He is also ranked third in the region for javelin (56.08 meters/184 feet) and a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that is ranked second (40.57 seconds).

Gharsalli brings his outdoor All-Region total to six and will leave Northwood with nine combined honors (indoors and outdoors).

Rounding out the men's All-Region honors are junior Christopher Bent and sophomore Andrew Davis, as they are the part of the 4x100 meter relay that is ranked second regionally (40.57 seconds). This will be Bent's second outdoor All-Region honor and Davis's first.

On the women's side, freshman Debra Wallace earned All-Region honors in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Her time of 24.20 seconds in the 200 at Mount Olive ranks her fourth in the region, while she is ranked fifth in the 400 with a time of 56.43 seconds achieved at the Bellarmine Invitational. These are the first two All-Region honors of Wallace's career.

The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction for the season. The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West – match those used during the cross country season.

The 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place May 23-25 in Kingsville, Texas.
