Track & Field Programs Have Strong Opening Day At GVSU Holiday Open

OVERVIEW

MEET: GVSU Holiday Open

LOCATION: Allendale, Mich. – Grand Valley State University

RECAP: Northwood track & field teams started their 2021-22 indoor season strong with a good showing at the GVSU Holiday Open Friday (December 3).

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • Nathan Powers set a new school record in the weight throw, tossing 20.18 meters for an NCAA Provisional mark. That was the top mark from a DII athlete at the event and good for third overall. His toss broke the record of former NU All-American Paul Evans (20.11 meters).
  • Zechariah Stickler broke one of the oldest school records still standing, tossing an NCAA Provisional mark of 17.74 meters in the shot put. That mark broke the record of Chris Rusher, who recently was inducted into the Northwood Athletic Hall of Fame. Rusher's mark of 17.00 meters was set in 1984.
  • Travis Schepers and Will Nemecek each had strong showings in the shot put as well, as Schepers hit the NCAA Provisional standard at 16.88 meters while Nemecek moved to seventh in school history at 16.00 meters.
  • Xzavia Price placed second in the 60 meter dash with an NCAA Provisional time of 6.84.
  • Northwood had a pair of student-athletes hit the provisional mark in the 800, with Stephen Barker clocking a 1:51.64 and Josiah Morse running a 1:52.83. Barker's time is good for fourth in school history.
  • Dylan Powers finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 17.69 meters, which is good for fifth in school history.  
  • Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty moved into third place in school history in the 3,000, clocking an 18 second personal-best at 8:28.96.
  • Carson Laney moved to ninth in school history thanks to his performance in the 3,000, clocking 8:43.60 to finish third in his heat.

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Debra Wallace placed third in the 200 with a time of 25:27.
  • Taky Ezell hit the provisional mark in the invite weight throw with a toss of 17.15 meters, good for seventh place.
  • Jessica Kursinsky placed ninth in the invite shot put with a toss of 12.87 meters.
  • Avery Stadt improved on her time in the 800, which already puts her seventh on the all-time performers list. She clocked a 2:23.64, nearly a one-second improvement.
  • Emily Coulter had a PR in the shot put, tossing 9.88 meters to place fifth in the regular event.

UP NEXT

  • Selected members of the teams will compete at the Andres Family Alumni Open at Tiffin University Friday (December 10).
