Men's Track & Field Takes Third At The GLIAC Championships As Teams Compete At Grand Valley

OVERVIEW

MEET: 2022 GLIAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOCATION: Allendale, Michigan

RECAP: The Timberwolves' track & field teams began their postseason run at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships. After Thursday's session, the men's team sat in the third with 42 points while the women were in eighth with seven points.

Northwood men's trakc & field team would finish third with 118 points, a single point behind Davenport. Xzavia Price was named High Point Athlete of the Meet, an honor that goes to the highest team point scorer.

The women's team would go on to place eighth behind a 21.50-point meet.

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  •  It was a meet to remember for Price, who landed on the podium three different times this weekend - earning both of Northwood's championships they received. He took first in the long jump (7.14m PR) and 100m dash (11.01). His final leap of the event moved him into fifth place in school history.
  •  Price, Andrew DavisThomas Heslip, and Jordan Taiwo earned a spot on the podium via a 43.38 third place finish in the 4x100m.
  •  The Timberwolves were well represented on the podium of the long jump. Jon Kelm, as well as Price, set a new personal best in the long jump. Kelm cleared 6.85m en route to claiming third and adding six team points.
  •  Davis would also place seventh in the 100m at 11.21 and get two team points.
  • Zane Aldrich would land on the podium twice. He took third in the 10k behind a 30:33.05 performance and second in the 5k (14:39.83). Aldrich's 10k cleared the provisional mark by 13 seconds.
  • Dillan Haviland made his presence felt in the 1500m. Haviland would lead for most of the race, pushing the tempo. He would finish third at 3:49.69 with an NCAA provisional mark.
  •  The combination of Stephen Barker (1:51.14), Josiah Morse (1:51.93), and Josh Jones (1:52.64) would give the Timberwolves second, third, and fourth place finishes in the 800m. Barker's mark would clear the NCAA mark and the three combined would get the team 19 team points.
  • Thomas Heslip, Jones, Barker, and Morse would compete for the Timberwolves in the 4x400m. They placed third at 3;18.94.
  • Will Nemecek (15.68m) would score four for NU with a fifth place finish in the shot.
  • Nathan Powers would be Northwood's leading scorer in the hammer. Powers placed fourth with a 60.55m toss.
  • David Kotliarker (57.12m) and Dylan Powers (56.16m) would add three team points by respectfully finishing seventh and eighth in the hammer. All Northwood competitors would score team points (8) as well as clear the NCAA provisional marks.
  • Zechariah Stickler (50.69m) earned eight points and cleared the NCAA mark in discus.
  • The duo of Max Lerchen and Taiwo competed in the decathlon taking fourth (Lerchen) and fifth (Taiwo) respectfully. Lerchen's best event came during the javelin portion, as he won with a 44.97m throw. Lerchen would go on to finish with 4950 pts.
  • Lerchen would reset his personal best later in the meet during the javelin event itself. His 45.16m toss landed him in seventh and getting two team points.
  • Taiwo's bright spot during the decathlon came during the pole vault. Taiwo took second with 3.80m clearance. Taiwo would finish with 4130 pts.
  • Justin Doles took sixth and gained three points via a 12.06m leap in the triple jump.
  • Andrew Wendler managed to get the Timberwolves another team point in the 3000m steeplechase as he took ninth at 9:32.46.

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • Jessica Kursinsky had herself a final day of competition. She earned eight team points in shot put behind her season-long, 14.50m throw. That mark puts her at No. 11 in Division II this season. Kursinsky would also compete in discus and finish 10th at 37.83m.
  • Hailey Granata set a new personal best in the javelin. Her 33.65m throw would get the Timberwolves five team points by placing fourth and would move her into third all-time in Northwood history.
  • On Thursday, Emily Coulter took seventh in the javelin with a 32.69m personal record throw. Coutler now ranks fourth all-time in Northwood javelin distance. Coulter (9.79m) would also place 15th in shot.
  • Isabel Anderson (1.53m) placed fifth in the high jump earning 3.5 points.
  • Granata, Alexis KaantaKaehla Manly, and Molly Kitson were able to grab an extra two team points, finishing seventh in the 4x100m at 52.20.
  • Taky Ezell placed 11th with a toss of 37.14 in the discus.
  • Molly Dickinson (20:01.99) and Amanda Kalkman (20:42.90) finished 24th and 25th in the 5k.
  • Kaanta had a 4.76m jump in the long jump to finish ninth. She would also place ninth in the long jump at 4.76m.
  • Kameron Haag took 13th in the 10k as she crossed the finish line at 39:31.13.

Northwood will compete at last chance meets before gearing up for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 26) that will be hosted by Grand Valley State.
