Softball Splits At Ohio Dominican To Open GLIAC Play

The Northwood University softball team opened GLIAC play by splitting at Ohio Dominican Friday afternoon (March 22).  ODU earned a comeback 3-2 win in eight innings in game one before Northwood posted a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

Northwood stands at 10-9 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC. Ohio Dominican is 5-18-1 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got off to a good start in game one, plating a run just two batters into the contest.  Paige Shields (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina) led off with a double, which was followed by a Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) RBI single. After ODU tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, the score remained 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning when Klonowski nailed a solo home run to put the Timberwolves up 2-1.  NU was one strike away from earning the win in the bottom of the seventh, but the Panthers got a two-out double RBI double to tie the game 2-2.  Ohio Dominican then earned the win in the bottom of the eighth inning. Klonowski led Northwood with two of their six hits and both of the team's RBI's.

Ohio Dominican scored a run in the top of the second inning of game two to go up 1-0, but it was all Northwood from that point on.  NU scored three in the second, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the win. The key player for the Northwood offense was senior outfielder Rachel Hammer (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland).  She went 3-3 in the game with two home runs, three RBI's and three runs scored.  Her third inning two-run homer put the Timberwolves on top for good.  Klonowski added three more hits in the game, while Lyndsey Look (Pinconning, Mich.) and Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini) each had two hits and an RBI.  Shields also added a two-run double as well.  Sophomore Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) improved to 5-3 on the season with the win in the circle, scattering 10 hits (nine singles) over seven innings of one-run work.

Northwood will travel to Tiffin Saturday (March 23).  The doubleheader will get under way at 1 p.m.
