Softball Sweeps Lake Erie

The Northwood University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Lake Erie Sunday afternoon (April 7).  Northwood earned a 7-0 win in game one before posting a 9-1 victory in game two.

Northwood has now won five straight and is 19-12 overall, 9-3 in the GLIAC.  Lake Erie is 2-22 overall, 0-14 in the GLIAC.

In game one, the Timberwolves got the scoring going in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Rachel Hammer (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland).  Northwood extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on a two-run double by Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini).  Marisa Borkowski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) then made the score 4-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.  NU finished the scoring in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Kesley Beck and a two-run homer by Borkowski.  Hammer ended the game with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.  Paige Shields (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina) added two hits and two runs, while Borkowski had three RBI's.  Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) tossed six shutout innings to improve to 10-4 on the season.

Game two saw Lake Erie take a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.  That's when the Timberwolves' offense broke loose, plating seven runs.  Northwood had three home runs in the inning: Shields and Natalie Lampman (Madison Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) had solo shots while Lindsey Obremski (Williamsburg, Va./Dubois Area) had a three-run homer.  Zaborowski also added a two-run double in the inning.  Hammer then had a solo homer in the fourth to make the score 8-1, which was followed by NU finishing the game with a run on a Lake Erie error in the fifth.  Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run in four innings of work.

Northwood will travel to Ferris State Wednesday (April 10) for a doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
