Softball Sweeps Wayne State - 9-2 & 5-1

The Northwood University softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep over Wayne State Friday afternoon (April 26).  The Timberwolves won game one 9-2 before posting a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

Northwood, who is currently ranked sixth in the Midwest Region, improves to 27-14 overall, 17-5 in the GLIAC.  Wayne State, the 10th ranked team in the region, falls to 22-19 overall, 13-8 in the GLIAC.

In game one, Northwood took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Rachel Hammer (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland).  After the Warriors tied the game in the second, Northwood re-took the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by junior Sam Zaborowski (Taylor, Mich./Cabrini).  Paige Shields (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina) made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run. The score remained that way until the sixth when the Timberwolves broke the game open.  Shields had a sac fly to make the lead 5-2.  NU then took advantage of a pair of WSU mistakes.  The Warriors had an error followed by an NU batter reaching on a wild pitch on a strikeout.  Hammer made WSU pay for those miscues with a two-out grand slam to put the game away.    She led the way for the Northwood offense in the game with two hits, two runs scored and five RBI's.  Shields finished with two runs, two RBI's, a home run and a walk.  Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) earned her 10th straight win with a complete game effort.  She allowed two runs on seven hits to improve to 15-4 overall.

The nightcap was scoreless in the third inning when Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) nailed a solo home run, her team-leading eighth of the season.  Shields extended the lead in the fifth inning with her second homer of the day and her fifth of the season.  The two-run shot made the score 3-0.  Wayne State had a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the inning, but Northwood put the game away in the top of the seventh with two more runs.  After scoring on an error, Shields posted her fifth RBI of the day on a sac fly.  Freshman pitcher Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio) turned in one of her finest performances of the season, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out five to improve to 5-5.

Northwood will host senior day Saturday (April 27) when they take on Saginaw Valley State.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
