Softball Splits With Lake Erie To Finish Regular Season

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team split a pair of games with Lake Erie to round out the regular season Saturday afternoon (April 25). NU earned a 3-0 win in game one before falling 8-7 in game two.

The Timberwolves finished the regular season 16-25 overall, 13-13 in the GLIAC. The Storm ends the season with a 13-25 record, 7-19 in the GLIAC.

With today's results, Northwood has been eliminated from contention for the GLIAC Tournament.

Both teams showed great defense in game one, with neither team committing a single error. However, Northwood's Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich.) was able to knock a run in on a single in the first and another on a double in the third to go up 2-0 after three innings. Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) led off the bottom of the fifth with the second homerun of her career.

Despite allowing the bases to be loaded on two separate occasions, NU senior Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) picked up a seven inning shutout. Northwood left four runners on base to seven for the Storm. Wontorcik finished with a pair of RBI's, while Lynn went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Senior Lindsay Obremski (Williamsburg, Va. / Dubois Area) also scored a run for Northwood.

Game two was scoreless into the fourth inning when NU plated a pair of runs on a Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning (Cleveland State)) homerun, for the second of her career. The Storm responded with a big fifth inning, knocking in six runs to take a 6-2 lead. The Timberwolves made a rally tying the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth with a three-run homerun by Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic), followed by Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc. / Mary D. Bradford) scoring on an Obremski single to right field. After LEC plated two runs in the bottom of the inning, Northwood was only able to score one in the top of the seventh to end the game.

The Timberwolves finished game two with 12 hits, including two homeruns. Lauren Look registered two RBI's and scored two runs on 2-for-3 batting. Ostapowicz registered three RBI's on her homer, while Ashley Lynn and Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) each went 2-for-4 in the game.
