Northwood Track & Field Takes Four Events As Nemecek Resets Shot Put Record At Jet's Pizza Invite

OVERVIEW – JET'S PIZZA INVITATIONAL

LOCATION: Saginaw Valley St. – University Center, Mich.

RECAP: Northwood men's and women's track & field won four events at the Jet's Pizza Invitational (Friday 7-8) this weekend. The Northwood throws team saw Will Nemecek become the first NU athlete to break the 18m mark for the indoor shot put. Kelsey Hansen also went on to win both the women's shot put and weight throw competitions.

INSIDE THE MEET

FOR THE MEN

  • Will Nemecek became the first Northwood athlete to break the 18m mark for the indoor shot put. Nemecek broke his program record with an 18m toss on his final attempt. He won the shot put event and has the eighth-best toss in DII this season.
  • After the 60m hurdle prelims on Friday, the Timberwolves saw three runners qualify for the finals. Blake Vier led the blue and white team with a time of 7.98 seconds, followed by Matheu Morrison in second place with an 8.15 mark, and Owen Hager, who achieved a personal record (PR) of 8.41 in fifth place. Vier went on to win the 60m hurdle finals with an 8.05 finish with Hager taking fifth.
  • Luke Eros was the top team finisher in the men's weight throw. His first attempt proved to be his furthest, with an 18.84m toss. Five of Luke's six attempts cleared the NCAA Provisional mark of 18.20m.
  • Inside the men's mile, Caleb Palmreuter improved his PR to finish fifth in 4:16.27. That mark is a team-best this season.
  • Diogo Vaz and Arthur Powell IV led all Timberwolves in the 60m dash and 200m events. Vaz took 13th in the 60m and 14th in the 200m with times of 6.98 and 22.33. Powell IV took 21st in the 60m and 15th in the 200m with finishes of 7.09 and 22.39.
  • Omari Hairston placed fourth overall in the shot put with a 15.63m toss on his final toss.
  • Michael Cook added another top-ten finish for the Timberwolves in the 400m. His 50.36 mark placed him tenth.

FOR THE WOMEN

  • Kelsey Hansen finished first amongst 31 athletes in the women's weight throw. Her second attempt hit 15.83m to get the win. Hansen also went on to take the women's shot put title with a 13.56m toss. These are the sophomore's first event wins of the season.
  • Breanna Hyde tabbed a 5.3m leap in the long jump. Her mark earned her a fifth place finish
  • Keiyera Johnson finished tenth in the 60-meter hurdles. Her 9.50 finish tied her season best.
  • Reina McMahon matched her career best in the high jump. McMahon's 1.42m high jump was good enough for 11th in the competition.
  • Ariel Warner placed eighth overall in the women's mile. Her 5:06.33 finish is a new PR by five seconds and a team-best this season.
  • Sarah Zehr and Landry Koski were Northwood's best placers in the women's mile. Zehr (10:31.08) took seventh while Koski (10:39.08) finished tenth.
  • Jenna Gaul took 13th in 400m race with a 1:02.57 finish. The mark gave her a new collegiate PR.

  • Northwood men's and women's track & field teams will compete next weekend at the Jud Logan Lightgiver Open (February 7-8) at Ashland and the Mike Lints Alumni Open (February 8) at Grand Valley St.
