Women's Basketball Defeats Walsh 88-68

The Northwood University women's basketball team opened the home portion of their schedule with an 88-68 victory over Walsh Thursday night (December 6).

The Timberwolves are now 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the GLIAC.  Walsh falls to 1-3 overall, 0-3 in the GLIAC.

Northwood led the majority of the first half, going up by as many as 12 points.  The Timberwolves eventually earned a 43-37 lead at the break.  Both teams shot well in the half – Northwood finished at 50.0 percent (15-30) overall while Walsh shot 63.0 percent (17-27). 

Walsh came out strong in the second half, out-scoring Northwood 19-9 to start the half to go up 56-52 with 12:22 to go.  But redshirt freshman Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes) came off the bench and gave Northwood a big spark that proved to be the key to the game.  She checked in with the score tied 58-58 – the Timberwolves proceeded to score on 13 of their next 14 possessions to take control.  Northwood out-scored Walsh 28-8  in that stretch to go up 20 and earn the win.

For the game, Northwood shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor.  Walsh finished the game with a higher shooting percentage (52.7 percent - 29-55), but the Timberwolves earned the win at the foul line.  Northwood made 27 free throws to five for the Cavaliers.

Six Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) with 16 points.  Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) came off the bench to score 14.  Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) had 12 points, while Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) had 10 points and seven assists.

Northwood will host Malone Saturday afternoon (December 8). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
