Women's Basketball Falls To Lake Superior State 58-53

The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped a 58-53 contest to Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon (January 12).

The Timberwolves fall to 7-9 overall, 5-5 in the GLIAC.  The Lakers improve to 5-9 overall, 4-6 in the GLIAC.

Northwood got off to a great start in the contest, jumping out to a 20-9 advantage at the 9:45 mark of the opening half.  The Timberwolves were dominating the glass at that point, out-rebounding the Lakers 19-6.  But Northwood's offense went ice-cold at that point, scoring just six points over the final 10 minute of the half while missing 13 consecutive field goal attempts.  The Lakers rallied back to even the score at 26-26 at the break.  NU finished at 20.0 percent from the floor (7-35) while LSSU shot 39.1 percent (9-23) in the half.  Northwood finished with a 28-15 edge in rebounding, which gave them a 10-2 edge in second chance points in the opening 20 minutes.

NU's poor shooting continued in the second half, as Northwood connected on just 7-30 attempts after the break.  Despite their struggles, NU trailed by just one at 52-51 with 57 seconds remaining.  The Lakers were clutch at the foul line in the final moments, however, making their final six free throws in the last minute to clinch the win.

Northwood finished the game at 21.5 percent overall (14-65), thanks in large part to their struggles with layups.  The Timberwolves made just 6-37 layup attempts in the game (16.2 percent).  By comparison, LSSU finished 9-17 on layup attempts (52.9 percent) and 43.8 percent overall (21-48).  NU used the foul line to stay in the game, connecting on 22-24 overall (91.7 percent).  The Timberwolves finished the game with a 48-34 advantage in rebounding, which to the earning a 14-4 edge in second chance points.

Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) led Northwood in scoring, finishing with 13 points.  Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) had 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals in the game.

Northwood will host Ferris State Thursday night (January 12).  Game time is set for 8 p.m.
