Women's Basketball Defeats Walsh 68-53

The Northwood University women's basketball team earned a 68-53 road win over Walsh Thursday night (December 12).

The contest was the first conference road contest for the Timberwolves.  NU is now 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the GLIAC. Walsh falls to 3-4 overall, 0-3 in the GLIAC.

Northwood jumped out early, scoring eight of the first nine points of the game to take a seven point lead.  The Timberwolves led by as many as nine before the Cavaliers fought back to tie the game 24-24.  But NU finished the half strong, scoring seven of the final nine points of the half to go up 31-26 at the break. Northwood shot 39.4 percent from the floor (13-33) while holding Walsh to 33.3 percent (8-24). The Cavaliers went 9-10 from the foul line while the Timberwolves finished 2-3 to keep Walsh close at the break.

NU got off to a great start in the second half, scoring 13 of the first 16 points to open up a 43-29 lead with 16:32 remaining. The Cavaliers fought back again, cutting the lead to 43-37 with just under 13 minutes remaining. But the Timberwolves responded once again, netting eight straight points to get the lead back up to 51-37. Walsh got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood shot 36.4 percent from the floor (24-66) while holding Walsh to a 29.6 percent mark (16-54). NU did a much better job getting to the foul line in the second half, making 15-18 attempts after the break to finish at 17-21 overall (81.0 percent).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes). She scored 19 points in the game, 16 of which came after halftime. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Aleigha Wylie (Hemlock, Mich./Midland) came off the bench to register 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Emily Kutch (Freeport, Mich./Lakewood) scored 10 points in her first career start.

Northwood will travel to Malone Saturday (December 14). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
