Women's Basketball Loses At Malone 89-77
The Northwood University women's basketball team dropped an 89-77 contest at Malone Saturday afternoon (December 14).
Northwood falls to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC. Malone improves to 5-3 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC.
Malone took a pair of seven point leads in the first half, but the Timberwolves fought back late to go up by six late. NU eventually took a 40-38 lead to the locker room. Both teams shot well in the opening 20 minutes – NU finished at 53.3 percent (16-30) while Malone connected on 53.1 percent (17-32) from the floor.
The Pioneers offense got even better in the second half, shooting a blistering 70.8 percent from the floor after the break (17-24). Malone also connected on 6-8 from 3-point range (75.0 percent). Northwood still led 53-52 with 13 minutes remaining, but an 18-2 run by Malone gave them a 70-55 lead. Northwood got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Malone's 60.7 field goal percentage (34-56) is the highest allowed by the Timberwolves this season. Northwood finished at 44.8 percent overall (26-58). Rebounding was a key part of the game as well, as the Pioneers out-rebounded the Timberwolves 41-20 for the game.
Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) led the way for Northwood, finishing with 24 points. She went 6-11 from the floor and 12-13 from the foul line. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 20 points, while Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) added 10 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Northwood will return to action January 2 against Ashland. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
