Women's Basketball Claims 60-46 Win At Lake Superior State

The Northwood University women's basketball team claimed its third straight win Saturday afternoon (January 18), claiming a 60-46 road win over Lake Superior State.

Northwood is now 8-6 overall, 6-4 in the GLIAC. LSSU falls to 4-12 overall, 4-6 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves took the lead 4-2 early and would go on to lead the rest of the way. NU got the advantage up to 18-6 before the second media timeout.  Northwood led by as many as 14 in the opening half before settling for a 30-23 lead at the break.  NU shot 37.9 percent from the floor (11-29), while LSSU finished at 36.0 percent (9-25). Rebounding was a key to the Northwood lead – the Timberwolves finished the opening 20 minutes with a 23-15 edge on the boards.

Northwood came out strong in the second half, getting the lead back up to 44-28 within six minutes of the second half. The Timberwolves led by as many as 18 and did not allow the Lakers to get any closer than 11 the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood finished at 38.2 percent from the floor (21-55).  The Timberwolves also went 5-13 from 3-point range (38.5 percent) and 13-19 from the foul line (68.4 percent).  LSSU finished at 37.0 percent overall (17-46), 22.0 percent from the foul line (2-9) and 58.8 percent from the foul line (10-17). Northwood also finished with a 41-30 edge on the boards.

Leading the way for Northwood was freshman Emily Kutch (Freeport, Mich./Lakewood). She netted a career-high 19 points, going 6-9 from the floor, 3-6 from 3-point range and 4-5 from the foul line. Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) added 11 points and four assists.  Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Northwood will travel to Ferris State Thursday night (January 23). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
