Women's Basketball Defeats Lake Superior State 73-51

The Northwood University women's basketball team earned a 73-51 win over Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon (February 8).

Northwood improves to 11-10 overall, 9-8 in the GLIAC. LSSU falls to 5-18 overall, 5-12 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got a 3-point play on their first possession of the game and would lead the rest of the way. NU took leads to 17-6, 24-9 and 39-14 before taking a 41-20 at halftime. Northwood shot 44.8 percent from the floor (13-29) while LSSU finished at 38.1 percent (8-21). Turnovers and points off turnovers were the key stat of the first half – Lake Superior committed 11 turnovers to just four for Northwood. That allowed the Timberwolves to out-score the Lakers in points off turnovers 19-1 in the opening half.

Lake Superior State made a few runs in the second half, but got no closer than 17 points in the final 20 minutes. Northwood led by as many as 26, which they earned on three separate occasions.

For the game, Northwood finished at 45.8 percent overall (27-59) while LSSU shot 38.8 percent (19-49). Northwood finished with a 38-30 edge on the boards and committed eight fewer turnovers for the game (9-17).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Sarah Trierweiler (Portland, Mich.) and Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.). Trierweiler netted a career-high 14 points off the bench, going 6-9 from the floor. Rivette finished the game with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) scored 13 points, while Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) had 11. Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) matched her career-high with 15 rebounds. She also had five assists and four blocks.

Northwood will host Ferris State Thursday night (February 13). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
