Women's Basketball Defeats Ferris State 66-57

The Northwood University women's basketball team posted its second straight win Thursday night (February 13), downing Ferris State 66-57.

The Timberwolves are now 12-10 overall, 10-8 in the GLIAC. Ferris State falls to 6-13 overall, 6-11 in the GLIAC.

The opening half of the game was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points. Northwood was up 27-22 with under two minutes remaining in the half, but the Bulldogs scored six of the final eight points of the half to cut the NU lead to 29-28 at the break. Neither team shot well in the half – NU finished at 27.6 percent (8-29) while FS connected on 32.1 percent (9-28).  The Timberwolves 3-point shooting was key in the half, as the Timberwolves connected on 5-11 from beyond the arc (45.5 percent.

After battling foul trouble, Northwood's starters came out and set the tone early in the second half. The Timberwolves opened the final 20 minutes by out-scoring FSU 21-9 in the first 10 minutes to take a 50-37 lead. Ferris State got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Northwood finished the game at 33.3 percent from the floor (21-63), while Ferris State connected on 31.6 percent (18-57). The 3-point line was a big key to the game, as FSU made just 2-13 (15.4 percent) from beyond the arc compared to Northwood at 7-22 (31.8). The Bulldogs entered the game connecting on over 38 percent from 3-point range as a team.

Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) led the way for Northwood, finishing with 17 points. Sarah Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) added 16 points and three blocked shots. Sarah Trierweiler (Portland, Mich.) came off the bench to score nine.

Northwood will travel to Grand Valley State Saturday night (February 15). Game time is set for 6 p.m.
