Women's Basketball Claims 85-56 Road Win Over Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The Northwood University women's basketball team picked up an 85-56 road win over Ferris State Thursday night (February 11).

After trailing by three points early in the first quarter, Northwood took the lead for good at 11-9 in the opening quarter. NU led by as many as seven in the first before taking a 20-15 lead after one quarter. Northwood shot 44.4 percent (8-18) while FSU finished at 40.0 percent in the opening 10 minutes.

The Timberwolves offense finished the first half strong. Over the final 3:44 of the second quarter, Northwood scored 15 points to take a seven point lead and turn it into a 43-28 advantage at halftime. FSU actually shot a higher percentage from the floor in the second quarter than NU (46.2-42.1), but Northwood held a 6-1 edge in offensive rebounds and committed four fewer turnovers (5-1). That allowed the Timberwolves to finish with a 7-2 edge in points off turnovers and a 6-0 advantage in second chance points. NU also went 7-7 from the foul line while the Bulldogs did not attempt a free throw in the quarter.

Northwood poured it on in the third quarter, shooting 57.8 percent (11-19) while holding FSU to a 36.5 percent mark (4-11). NU led 69-41 heading to the fourth quarter, which was their biggest lead to that point in the game.

NU was not challenged in the fourth quarter – Ferris State got no closer than 24 in the final 10 minutes. Northwood's biggest lead of the game proved to be 33 points (80-47).  

For the game, Northwood shot 46.4 percent (32-69) overall, compared to Ferris State at 38.9 percent (21-54). NU went 16-17 from the foul line (94.1 percent) while FSU finished up at 10-13 (76.9 percent). The Timberwolves controlled the play inside – Northwood out-scored Ferris State 50-30 in the paint and 20-6 on second-chance points.

Jordyn Nurenberg (St. Johns, Mich.) finished with a career-high 26 points in the game. She went 11-16 from the floor and 4-5 from the foul line. Nurenberg also added 11 rebounds for her NCAA Division II-leading 18th double-double of the season. Lauren Robak (Clarkston, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) scored 24 points, going 7-13 from the floor, 8-8 from the foul line and 2-4 from 3-point range. Robak moved into the top-five in school history in scoring with 1,382 points, moving past Paula Peterson (1,368) on the all-time list.

Northwood will host their home finale Saturday night (February 13) against Grand Valley State. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
