Women's Soccer Fights Until The End, But Falls In Conference Title Match To No. 3 Ashland 3-1

RECAP: Northwood women's soccer saw had their 2024 Great Midwest Women's Soccer Tournament run end Saturday evening (November 16) as the Timberwolves fell to the one-seed Ashland Eagles, 3-1, in the Championship final.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ashland went up 1-0 in the 11'. A free kick sent into the box bounced around before the Eagles notched the match's first score.
  • Northwood looked to capitalize on a free kick in the 17'. Carly Boyd sent a ball into a crowd of people. An offside call took Northwood's equalizer off the board. This was the Timberwolves' best opportunity in the first half, as Ashland went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
  • Just out of the break, in the 47', Ashland added their second of the match, 2-0 AU. A follow-up shot from a free kick extended the AU lead to two.
  • Ashland added another in the 69' for a 3-0 lead.
  • Northwood added one on a ball that barely got over the line from Addyson Gorzelski. Boyd's corner deflected into a mass of people on the goal line before Gorzelski leaped into the mass to put Northwood on the board.
  • Ashland's defense was too much for Northwood as they went on to win the third conference title in four years, 3-1 AU.

  • Northwood women's soccer finds out their fate for the 2024 NCAA DII Women's Soccer Tournament during the selection show. The NCAA Tournament selection show is scheduled for Monday (November 18) at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com. Seven teams from the Midwest region will qualify.
  • Northwood was previously ranked seventh before their semifinal win versus Findlay (November 14) and this loss to the Midwest Region's one-seed Ashland.

NORTHWOOD NOTES

  • Three Northwood athletes received All-Tournament honors from the G-MAC. The honorees were Junior defender Reagan Brengman, senior Brooke Honycutt, and redshirt sophomore Ashtyn Lange. Both Honeycutt and Lange scored braces during the tournament. Honeycutt's came in the semis versus Findlay (November 14) and Lange against Malone in the quarters (November 9).
