Indoor Track Teams Open Season At SVSU Holiday Classic

The Northwood University indoor track and field teams opened the indoor portion of their schedule at the SVSU Holiday Classic Friday night (December 7).

No team scoring was taken at the event, which featured athletes from Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Cornerstone and Spring Arbor.

On the men's side, freshman Enock Rono earned a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 800.  He ran a 1:54.36 to earn the victory by 1.7 seconds.  Daniel Capek also earned a provisional mark, thanks to winning the weight throw with a toss of 56-00.00.  Korvon Harris earned a victory in the 60 meter dash, clocking a 7.03 to beat out 20 competitors.  Harris also picked up a second place finish in the 200 with a time of 22.93.  NU also saw its top-two teams go 1-2 in the 4X400 meter relay.  The winning team of Jacob Hurrell, Matt Williams, Doug Lander and Rono clocked a 3:23.18.  The second place group of Wally Clay, Darius Davis, Jordan Fields and Travis Blunt turned in a time of 3:25.44.

The women's team also earned a NCAA provisional qualifier.  Lauren Gagnon placed second overall out of 13 runners in the 3,000, clocking a 10:09.39. Marsadie Cinato picked up the victory in the 400, clocking a 59.47.  Madison Pines narrowly missed out on a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the mile.  She placed second overall with a time of 5:04.27, which is just .04 off a provisional mark. 

Northwood will compete at the GVSU Holiday Invite next Friday (December 14).
