Sprinters Hit NCAA Provisional Marks, Numerous Personal Bests Highlight Gibson Invitational

PHILLIPS HITS MULTIPLE NCAA PROVOS, BREAKS TWO MEET RECORD

  • Sophomore Mason Phillips hit three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and broke two meet records at the Gibson Invitational in his second outdoor appearance.
  • Phillips ran a season best time of 10.59 seconds in the prelims of the 100 meter dash and returned to win the finals in 10.43 seconds for a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Both times surpassed the meet record and his time of 10.43 seconds ranks fourth in NCAA Division II on the qualifying last.
  • A personal best time, it was an improvement upon his third-best time in program history. His previous best was 10.53 set at the 2018 GLIAC Championship.
  • Later on, Phillips won the 200 meters in an outdoor personal best time of 20.97 seconds, which now ranks third in D2. His previous best in the event was 21.02 seconds set at the GLIAC Championships last season.

MEN'S 4X100 HITS NCAA PROVO

  • The men's 4x100 meter relay of freshman Andrew Davis, junior Christopher Bent, senior Rami Gharsalli and Phillips won the event in a NCAA provisional time of 40.57 seconds, posting the third-fastest time on the early Division II qualifying list.
  • The quartet virtually punched their ticket for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in May. Davis is the only newcomer from last year's NCAA qualifying relay team.

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN'S T&F

  • Gharsalli posted an improved NCAA provisional qualifying in the 110 meter hurdles. He ran 14.12 seconds in the prelims, a seasonal best, before winning the finals in 14.22 seconds.
  • Also in the sprints, Bent placed fifth in the 100 meters (10.85 seconds) and ran 22.22 in the 200 meters. Both times are seasonal best. Davis placed seventh in the 100 (10.89) to match his season best.
  • Freshman Jaiven Holmes-Powell ran 58.59 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles to place eighth.
  • The men's 800 meter run had two Timberwolves place among the top eight. Freshman Josiah Morse claimed the win with a collegiate best time of 1:53.20 to move into seventh in NU's all-time book. Junior Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty ran 1:55.23 to place fifth for an outdoor best.
  • In the 5000 meter run, Caleb Barker placed seventh with a time of 16:19.30.
  • Senior Dylan Rocha clocked a personal best in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a third place finishing time of 9:29.91. His previous personal best in the event was 9:33.38 at last year's GLIAC Championships and improved upon his performance as the second-best steepler in school history.
  • The men's 4x400 meter relay of Davis, Morse, Paige and Phillips placed second with an outdoor best time of 3:18.10.
  • Sophomore Hunter Berecz placed eighth in the hammer throw, with his third throw of the day going 47.89 meters (157 feet-1 inch). He also placed fourth in shot put with a heave of 15.07 meters (49 feet-5.5 inches) for an outdoor personal best and the fourth-best shot putter in NU history.
  • Earning a huge personal best in the hammer throw was freshman Zechariah Stickler. His first throw of the day landed at 47.06 meters (154 feet-5 inches) to finish eighth in finals. He now sits ninth all-time in program history after bettering his previous personal best of 42.31 meters.
  • Stickler also registered a discus throw of 41.89 meters (137 feet-5 inches) to move to ninth in program history and posting a collegiate best.
  • Freshman Travis Schepers earned a new collegiate best in the shot put with a throw of 14.97 meters (49 feet-1.5 inches) and moving into fifth in NU history for the event.
  • Freshman Max Lerchen earned himself a personal best in the javelin, moving himself into sixth all-time in Northwood history. His second throw of the day landed at 49.24 meters (161 feet-6 inches) to place third. His previous personal best was 45.41 meters set at the Bellarmine Invitational last weekend.

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN'S T&F

  • Senior Heaven Powell placed second in the high jump with a seasonal best effort of 1.66 meters (5 feet-5.25 inches), narrowly missing the NCAA provisional standard of 1.67 meters.
  • Freshman Debra Wallace clocked a collegiate best in the 200 meters, placing second in 24.70 seconds. She now ranks third in school history in the event. This is the first time she has broken 25 seconds in the 200 collegiately.
  • Sophomore Amanda Aquinaga clocked a new personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.13. Already the seventh best outdoor 800 meter runner in program history, she improved upon her previous best of 2:24.20 set at the Hillsdale GINA Relays last year.
  • Also in the high jump, freshman Isabel Anderson placed fifth with a day's best clearance of 1.55 meters (5 feet-1 inch) for a collegiate best. Her mark is also the fourth-best in school history in the outdoor high jump.
  • The 4x400 meter relay of freshman Kaehla Manly, Wallace, Aquinaga and Anderson placed fifth with a time of 4:17.51.
  • Senior Riley Johnson placed fourth in discus with a day's best throw of 41.38 meters (135 feet-9 inches) to move into sixth in program history. She also placed seventh in the javelin finals, with her best throw of the day landing 34.94 meters (114 feet-07 inches).
  • A two-event finalist was sophomore Jessica Marvin. Marvin placed fourth in discus with a personal best throw of 41.38 meters (135 feet-9 inches) to move into fourth in program history and improving her previous best by over a meter (39.99 meters). She also placed ninth in hammer finals with a personal best of 45.79 meters (150 feet-3 inches), an improvement of over 4 meters from her previous best of 41.25 meters to move into fifth on the all-time list.
  • Redshirt freshman Taky Ezell placed eighth in hammer on a personal best mark of 45.97 meters (150 feet-10 inches) and improving upon her mark as the fourth best hammer thrower in program history. Her previous best coming into the weekend was 44.39 meters.
  • Sophomore Jessica Kursinsky placed seventh in shot put with a heave of 12.54 meters (41 feet-1.75 inches), a season best. In the hammer throw, she moved her personal best up to 39.31 meters (129 feet), over a 4 meter improvement from her first outing last weekend.

UP NEXT: The track and field squads will split between the Bison Outdoor Classic, Ball State Challenge and Walsh Invitational Saturday-Sunday (April 13-14).
