Mason Phillips and Debra Wallace Lead Track & Field Teams At GLIAC Indoor Championships

OVERVIEW – GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOCATION: Allendale, Mich. – Grand Valley State University

RECAP: The Northwood track & field teams have strong showings at the GLIAC Indoor Championships, with the men placing third and women finishing eighth Saturday and Sunday (February 29-March 1).

INSIDE THE MEET – MEN

  • Northwood finished third with 87 points.
  • Grand Valley State was the champion with 208.5 points, followed by Ashland at 181.
  • A total of eight teams competed at the championship.
  • Mason Phillips' historic day led the way for Northwood, as he was the overall winner in both the 60 (6.65) and the 200 (20.76). Both of those times are new Northwood school records and NCAA automatic qualifiers. The time in the 200 is the second fastest in the history of NCAA Division II and is the fastest in GLIAC Championship history. He now ranks No. 1 in the country in the event. Phillips is also ranked No. 2 in Division II in the 60.
  • Phillips also ran a leg on the Northwood 4X400 relay team along with Andrew Davis, Dallas Cleary and Josiah Morse. They placed third overall with an NCAA provisional time of 3:15.80.
  • The 60 meter dash proved to be vital in the team's success, as Northwood placed three in the top five overall. Joining Phillips were Xzavia Price and Andrew Davis, who placed second and fifth, respectively in the finals with times of 6.81 and 7.03. Price's time in the preliminaries of 6.78 is an NCAA provisional qualifier and moves him into fourth on the Northwood All-Time performers list. Davis' prelim time of 6.93 is good for 10th on the NU performers list.
  • Morse came through with a second place finish in the 800 with an NCAA provisional time of 1:52.15. Netunji Paige placed fifth in the event with another NCAA provisional time of 1:52.92.
  • Price earned a third place finish in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 7.05 meters. That is good for fifth on the NU all-time performers list.
  • Northwood's triple jump unit came up big, with three individual scoring points for the Timberwolves.  Austin Hamlet placed fifth with a mark of 13.06 meters, while JaiVen Holmes-Powell (12.86 meters) and Keenan Willamson (12.82 meters placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Holmes-Powell now stands ninth on the NU performers list while Williamson is 10th.
  • Hunter Berecz scored for Northwood in both of the throwing events, placing second in the shot put (16.70 meters) and eighth in the weight throw (16.51 meters). His mark in the shot put is an NCAA provisional qualifier and puts him second in school history in the event.
  • Zechariah Stickler gave Northwood another scorer in the shot by placing seventh overall at 16.28 meters. That toss places him fourth on the NU all-time performers list and is an NCAA provisional qualifier.
  • Northwood got points in the distance events as well as Zane Aldrich finished eighth in both the 3,000 meter run (8:32.14) and the 5,000 meter run (15:00.55).
  • Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty and Mike Allen led the way for the mid-distance runners in the mile, as Mancillas-Finnerty placed sixth (4:15.95) and Allen finished eighth (4:20.40).
  • Northwood's distance medley relay team of Chase Clark, Morse, Paige and Mancillas-Finnerty earned a fourth place finish with a time of 10:07.0. 

INSIDE THE MEET – WOMEN

  • The women's team placed eighth with 23 points – two more points than they scored a year ago.
  • Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 242.5 points, followed by Saginaw Valley (115) and Ashland (101.5).
  • A total of 10 teams competed at the event.
  • Debra Wallace led the way for Northwood, placing second in both the 200 (24.86) and the 400 (56.02). Her time in the 400 is an NCAA provisional qualifier and is a new school record, breaking one of the longest-standing records in the book. The old mark of 57.57 was held by Northwood Hall of Famer Safiyyah Abdul-Malik in 1987.
  • Jessica Kursinsky placed third in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 13.71 meters
  • Lainey Veenkant had a personal-best time of 17:58.51 in the 5,000 meter run to place eighth overall and is good for fifth on the Northwood all-time performers list.
