Track & Field Competes Across The United States To Open Up The Outdoor Season

OVERVIEW 

MEET: Big Blue Classic / Splank Blasing Invitational / Raleigh Relays

LOCATION: Eastern Illinois University – Charleston, Ill. / Colorado St.- Pueblo – Pueblo, Colo. / North Carolina St. – Raleigh, N.C.

RECAP: Northwood men's and women's track & field began their outdoor seasons this weekend (March 23-25). The teams competed across the United States from Raleigh, N.C. to Pueblo, Colo., and Charleston, Ill.

INSIDE THE MEET – RALEIGH RELAYS

  • Josh Jones set a five-second personal record (PR) in the 1500m. Jones finished in 3:49.71, moved into third in program history, and was less than a half-second off the school record. It's eighth best in DII this outdoor season. Jones ran the fourth-best DII time for 800m as well, finishing in 1:51.08.
  • Dillan Haviland also competed in the 1500m; he finished in 3:53.72. He would later PR in the 800m, running a 1:50.81, currently the second-best in DII this season. Haviland's 800m finish is now fourth in the all-time NU record books. Both Jones and Haviland's 800m races cleared the NCAA mark.
  • The Timberwolves earned a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Jon Kelm's PR of 7.02m. Kelm now has the 10th-best jump in NU history. His mark currently ranks 15th in DII this season.
  • Zane Aldrich repped the Blue and White during the 10,000m run. The senior finished in 30.36.73, a 23rd-best mark in DII this season.

INSIDE THE MEET – SPLANK BLASING INVITATIONAL

  • Out west, the Northwood's throws team competed. David Kotliarker placed fourth with a 54.23m mark in the hammer throw. 
  • Zechariah Stickler hit 17.22m in the shot put, placing fourth. Just behind him, Travis Schepers took fifth with a 16.57m mark.
  • The lefty, Will Nemecek, placed 10th in the shot put with a best throw of 15.12m. 
  • Stickler (44.45m – 14th), Schepers (40.76m – 21st), and Nemecek (39.00m -24th) also repped for Northwood in the discus competition.
  • The lone member of the women's team, Lillian Albaugh competed in the shot as well. Albaugh took seventh with a 12.58m toss.

INSIDE THE MEET – BIG BLUE CLASSIC

FOR THE WOMEN

  • Emily Coulter placed ninth in the women's javelin. Her best throw of 36.27m was PR by nearly four meters. She now holds the second-best mark in NU history. During the flight, five of Coulter's six throws bested her previous PR.
  • During the women's 200m, Molly Kitson finished in 28.28 during the fourth heat. Her teammate Gabby Jones ran in the fifth heat, finishing in 28.71. The two runners also ran in the 400m with Jones placing just ahead at 1:03.17 followed by Kitson at 1:03.38.

FOR THE MEN 

  • Thomas Heslip (51.27) and Jordan Taiwo (55.06) ran during the 400m. Heslip placed sixth overall while Taiwo set a new PR by 1.2 seconds.
  • The multis athlete, Taiwo, also competed in two other events, discus (22.88m), as well as later setting a new PR during the long jump (6.44m).
  • Andrew Davis placed 17th overall in the 100m dash, finishing in 11.20.
  • Heslip later PR'd in the 200m race, finishing 18th in 23.12. His teammate Davis also ran the 200m, placing 20th in 23.26.
  • In the 110m hurdles, Matheu Morrison (15.26) and Blake Vier (15.34) ran their first collegiate outdoor races, placing seventh and ninth, respectively.

  • Northwood track & field is set to travel to Upland, Ind. on Saturday (April 1) to compete at the George Glass Invitational hosted by Taylor University.
