Volleyball Wins Pair At North Alabama

The Northwood University volleyball team earned a pair of wins at the 2013 North Alabama Classic Saturday (September 14). The Timberwolves downed UMSL 3-1 in the morning (25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18) before posting a comeback 3-2 win over Harding (17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 15-12).

Northwood is now 5-3 overall on the season.  NU had split two matches each of the first three days of competition this season prior to today.

NORTHWOOD 3, UMSL 1

Last season, during Northwood's GLIAC Championship season, the NU offense was a force.  The Timberwolves hit .231 as a team for the year.  But entering the UMSL match, Northwood's best hitting percentage in a match on the season was a .184 clip.  NU's offense had its best match of the season against the Tritons, however, finishing with a .241 clip (56-22-141).   Northwood also led UMSL to a .099 mark (39-25-142).  NU also out-dug the Tritons 66-49). Three Timberwolves finished with at least 10 kills, led by Juliia Pakhomenko (Donetsk, Ukraine).  She had 20 kills on 45 swings good for a .311 attack percentage.  Kristin Pershcon (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) had 11 kills and a .348 attack percentage, while Krysta Kramer (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) added 10 kills.

NORTHWOOD 3, HARDING 2

It appeared Northwood may have been heading for their fourth straight split, fall behind 2-1 heading into the fourth set.  But the Timberwolves dominated the fourth 25-15 and then jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fifth and earned the win. Northwood's offense showed signs of coming around, hitting .204 overall (54-20-167).  NU also registered a season-high 11 blocks in the match. Pakhomenko finished with 19 kills and a .245 attack percentage to lead the way for Northwood. Kramer and freshman Marissa Pomaville (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) each added 11 kills), while Pomaville and Perschon each added five blocks.

"We grew as a team this weekend," said head coach Tim Koth.  "Our offensive attack was much improved and defensively we were solid again.

Northwood will open GLIAC play Friday night (September 20) with a match against Ferris State.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
