Volleyball Loses Pair At Midwest Region Crossover

OVERVIEW – KENTUCKY WESLEYAN

SCORE: Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers 3, Northwood Timberwolves 2 (25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-12)/Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 3, Northwood 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15).

RECAP: Volleyball loses pair at the Midwest Regional Friday afternoon (October 18), losing to Kentucky Wesleyan 3-2 and Southern Indiana 3-0.

INSIDE THE MATCH – KENTUCKY WESLEYAN

  • After a tight start to the match, the Panthers took the lead for good at 10-9. Kentucky Wesleyan led by as many as six before eventually winning the opener 25-21. Northwood finished the opening set hitting .214 (15-6-37) while KWC ended at .233 (10-3-30).
  • Kentucky Wesleyan was the better team early in the second set, going up 8-4 after 12 points. Northwood fought back to take the lead for the first time at 10-9 and was the better team from that point out. NU led 17-15 before scoring eight of the final 10 points to take the second set 25-17. Northwood's offense was efficient in the second, hitting .360 (11-2-25). The Panthers finished the second set hitting .000 (9-9-35).
  • The third set was close until a late push by the Panthers. With KWC leading 16-15, the biggest lead was three for either team to that point. That is when Kentucky Wesleyan put together the key run to take the set, scoring six of the next seven to go up 22-16 on their way to a 25-21win. Both offenses struggled in the third: NU fell back to .143 (12-7-35) while KWC hit .053 (8-6-38).
  • Set four was even closer than the third – the Panther's early 10-7 lead was the only three-point advantage for either side. Kentucky Wesleyan held a 22-20 edge late when Northwood made a push to force a fifth set. The Timberwolves scored five of the final six points to win 25-23.  After a sluggish third set, both offenses came to life in the fourth: NU hit .324 (17-5-37) to KWC's .237 (13-4-38).
  • The Panthers jumped out to 7-3 and 10-4 leads in the final set. Northwood fought back and closed the gap to 13-10 and 14-12 before KWC closed out the match 15-12. Kentucky Wesleyan's offense was strong in the fifth, hitting .421 (9-1-19). Northwood hit .286 in the final set (9-3-21).

INSIDE THE MATCH – SOUTHERN INDIANA

  • Southern Indiana led 11-10 in the opening set when the Screaming Eagles broke things open. USI scored 10 of the next 14 points to go up 21-14 on their way to a 25-17 win. Southern Indiana hit .267 in the first set, while Northwood finished at .182 (10-4-33).
  • USI scored seven of the first 10 points of the second set and maintained their advantage the remainder of the way. NU got within three points at 15-12, only to see the Screaming Eagles register another 7-3 run. USI eventually took the second set by a matching score of 25-17. Northwood was held to a .000 attack percentage in the second (9-9-33). Southern Indiana hit .161 (11-6-31).
  • Northwood led 4-3 early on before Southern Indiana closed out the match. USI led 10-8 before scoring five straight points, leading the Screaming Eagles to a 25-15 win. NU hit  .000 for the second straight set (6-6-24), while USI finished at  .333 (13-4-27).
