Chris Rusher earned the highest honor possible for a Track & Field athlete at the 1985 NAIA Outdoor Championships, taking home the National Championship in the shot put. On his final throw of the competition, Rusher had a toss of 17.29 meters to win the event by .02 meters. That win helped Northwood earn a ninth place finish overall as a team. Rusher had finished second in the indoor shot put at the NAIA Indoor Championships earlier that year with a toss of 16.61 meters. Rusher showed he belonged on the national level in 1984 in the shot put, finishing fifth at the Indoor Championship (16.5 meters) and sixth at the outdoor championships (16.71 meters). A standout in the classroom as well, Rusher was named a First Team Academic All-American in his career. Rusher was a key part of the 1985 Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field teams that both took home GLIAC Championships.
