Baseball Drops Pair Of One-Run Games To Minnesota Duluth

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games versus Minnesota Duluth Friday afternoon (March 13). The Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 win in game one before downing Northwood 12-11 in 11 innings.

Northwood is now 5-7 on the season. UMD stands at 2-0.

Game one was a pitcher's duel from the start. Both teams had chances in the opening innings, but the score remained 0-0 heading into the fifth inning. Minnesota Duluth got on the board on a two-run single in the top of the inning. Northwood responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a Travis Smith (Clare, Mich) had a sacrifice fly that plated Dylan Trimarchi (Pasadena, Calif/Glendale CC), cutting the Bulldog lead down to 2-1. However, Northwood was unable to get another base runner over the final two innings.

For the game, the Bulldogs out-hit Northwood 9-1. The Timberwolves did draw five walks and were hit by a pitch, leading them to stranding five runners. Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) picked up the loss despite allowing two runs in a complete-game effort.

Game two proved to be the opposite from the opener, as both offenses performed at a high level. Northwood opened the scoring in the first inning, only to see UMD respond in the second with a run. Northwood then plated two in the third, which was followed by the Bulldogs plating three in the fourth to go up 4-3. NU responded well the deficit, scoring two in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh to open up a 10-4 lead. But the Bulldogs responded again, plating two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to tie the game 10-10. Northwood took the lead in the 11th on a Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) RBI single, making the score 11-10. UMD fought back one final time, scoring two in the bottom of the 11th to earn the win.

For the game, UMD finished with a 16-10 advantage in hits. Both teams showed a great of patience at the plate, combining for 28 walks (14 for each team).

McCarn finished the game 3-6 from the plate with a pair of runs and two RBIs. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two RBIs and two runs scored, while Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) had two hits and three RBIs.

Northwood and Minnesota-Duluth will play another double header Saturday (March 14). First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
