Baseball Splits Pair Versus Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN. – The Northwood University baseball team split a doubleheader at Carson-Newman Friday afternoon (February 19). The Eagles picked a 3-2 walk-off victory in game one before the Timberwolves earned a 6-0 victory in game two.

Northwood is now 2-1 on the season. Carson-Newman stands at 3-5.

Game one of the doubleheader saw both teams pitch well. Carson-Newman plated single runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0. The Timberwolves responded with a pair of runs in the fourth, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western/Lewis U.) and an RBI single by Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC). The score remained 2-2 until the seventh and final inning, when the Eagles got a two-out double to earn the win. Northwood had five hits in the game by five different players. Larry Wood (Essexville, Mich./Garber) pitched well despite getting a no-decision. He allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out six while allowing two runs.

Northwood got off to a better start in game two, going up 3-0 in the first thanks to a 3-run homer by Cody Kuzniczci (Madeira, Ohio/Northern Kentucky). NU expanded their lead to 4-0 in the third on an RBI single by Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.). The Timberwolves got an RBI double from Connor Foley (Bay City, Mich./Western/SVSU) in the eighth and then scored a single run on a wild pitch in the ninth to complete the shutout.

Northwood out-hit Carson-Newman 11-6 in the game. NU's pitching held Carson-Newman off the scoreboard for the first time since the 2014 season.

Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) picked up the win in his first start of the season. He allowed three hits in six innings of shutout work. Lewandowski struck out eight while walking three. Ken Reeves (Midland, Mich.), Jake Semak (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), and Dylan Roberts (Howell, Mich./Kalamazoo Valley CC) combined to keep Carson-Newman off the board in the final three innings.

Kuzniczci drove in three runs to lead the Northwood offense. Foley had three hits, while Lee, Nate Boschma (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) all had two hits.

Northwood and Carson-Newman will play another doubleheader Saturday afternoon (February 19). First pitch is set for Noon.
