Baseball Drops Pair At Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon (February 20). The Eagles took game one 12-6 before winning game two 3-2.

Northwood is now 2-3 on the season. Carson-Newman improves to 5-5.

The Timberwolves got off to a good start in game one, scoring a pair on a two-run single by Nick Black (). But the Eagles responded with three in the bottom of the first and two more in the third. Northwood got two back in the fourth on a Ben Balgaard () two-run homer to make the score 5-4. Carson-Newman responded with the key inning of the game, scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. Northwood scored two in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Black led the Norhtwood offense with three hits and four RBIs. Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) had two hits, while Balgaard had two RBIs.

In game two, Carson-Newman plated two runs in the first inning. Northwood got a run in the fourth on a Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) RBI single. The Eagles made it 3-1 in the fifth, which was followed by a run for Northwood on an error in the sixth.  The Timberwolves had at least one baserunner in each of the final three innings looking to tie the game but were unable to level the score.

Pulver had two hits, a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western) and Cody Kuziniczci (Madeira, Ohio/Northern Kentucky) each added two hits for Northwood. Brogan Fischer (Godfrey, Ill./Illinois Central CC) tossed three hitless innings in relief.

Northwood will travel to Florida for its annual spring trip starting March 5 with a doubleheader against Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
