Baseball Takes Pair From Ohio Valley

LEESBURG, FLA. – The Northwood University baseball team picked up a pair of wins against Ohio Valley University Thursday (March 10). The Timberwolves picked up a 17-3 win in game one before posting an 8-0 victory in game two.

Northwood is now 7-5 overall on the season. Ohio Valley falls to 3-12.

The Timberwolves jumped out early in game one and never looked back. Northwood scored two in the first and four in the third to go up 6-0. After Ohio Valley played a pair in the top of the fourth, the Timberwolves responded with nine runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 15-2 and put the game away.

Northwood finished the opening game with 15 hits while drawing six walks. OVU ended up with six hits and a pair of walks. Both teams finished with a pair of errors.

Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the way for the Northwood offense. He finished 2-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) added three hits and an RBI, while Cody Kuzniczci (Madeira, Ohio/Northern Kentucky) had two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Nick Barrientos (Zionsville, Ind./Danville Area CC) came off the bench and had a pinch-hit home run. Larry Wood (Essexville, Mich./Garber) picked up his first win of the season, allowing two earned runs in six innings of work.

After combining for 20 runs in game one, the pitching staffs in game two were the story for the majority of the game. The contest was scoreless heading to the eighth inning when Northwood broke through. The Timberwolves plated three in the eighth and five more in the ninth to complete the sweep.

NU finished with 9-6 advantage in hits in the second game. Northwood drew three walks to zero for Ohio Valley, while the Timberwolves committed the only two errors of the contest.

Pulver had the biggest hit of the game, a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning. He ended up with three RBIs in the game. Kuzinczci added two hits and a run scored. Logan Meadors (Oxnard, Calif./Midland U.) tossed a complete game shutout for the Timberwolves, allowing six hits (all singles) and no walks while striking out six. It was the fifth complete game in two seasons for Meadors and his second shutout.

Northwood will play Walsh in a non-conference game Friday morning (March 11). Game time is set for 9 a.m.
