Baseball Splits Pair Of Extra-Inning Games To Alderson-Broaddus

AUBURNDALE, FLA – The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of one-run, extra-inning games against Alderson-Broaddus Saturday (March 12). The Timberwolves won game one 3-2 in eight innings before ABU picked up a 2-1 eight-inning victory in game two.

Northwood now stands at 9-6 on the season. Alderson-Broaddus stands at 6-6.

The opening game saw the Timberwolves take the lead in the fourth inning with a run. NU made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth with another run, but Alderson-Broaddus hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. The Timberwolves plated the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on a Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) RBI single. The Battlers had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Shawn Larner (Gladinw, Mich./Alma College) struck out the final two batters to close out the game.

Cody Kuzniczci (Madeira, Ohio/Northern Kentucky) and Nate Boschma (Hudsonville, Mich.) each had two hits to lead the offense. Lennon Gwizdala (Bay City, Mich./Central) picked his first career victory in the game out of the bullpen, throwing 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Larner picked up his third save of the season. Kyle Vedrode (Alma, Mich./Muskegon CC) got a no-decision despite pitching well. He allowed two runs in five innings of work while striking out five.

Game two proved to be very similar to the opener. The Timberwolves took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run, only to see ABU tie the score in the fifth. Alderson-Broaddus scored a run on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth to go up 2-1. Northwood got a single in the bottom of the inning but were unable to tie the game, giving the Battlers a split in the doubleheader.

Kuzniczci had two of Northwood's four hits in the game. NU's pitchers once again threw well in the game, allowing one earned run on seven hits over eight innings of work.

Northwood will travel to Bellarmine for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Saturday (March 19). First pitch is set for Noon.
