Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Wayne State, Earning Three Wins In Four Game Series

GAME 1

SCORE: Northwood 1, Wayne State 3

RECORDS: Northwood 26-8 (13-3 GLIAC), Wayne State 23-11 (13-4 GLIAC)

RECAP: Wayne State's pitching shuts down the Timberwolves' potent offense en route to 3-1 win in game one.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

• A day after scoring 23 runs in two games, Northwood's sizzling bats were cooled off in game one by Wayne State pitching as the Timberwolves managed just one hit in the first three innings of the contest.
• Meanwhile, Wayne State plated a pair in the bottom of the second to grab a 2-0 lead.
• The top of the fourth began promising for Northwood as the first three hitters reached to load the bases with nobody out. However, Wayne State pitched around damaged and limited Northwood to just one run coming on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 2-1.

RECAP: Northwood's offense responds with outpouring of 20 runs to cruise to lopsided win over Wayne State in game two.   

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

• In a game that couldn't be more opposite of the previous contest, Northwood opened with two runs in the first on a Daniel Pulver two-run home run.
• Wayne State upped NU's two runs with three of their own in the home half of the first, but back came NU with two more in the top of the second on a RBI double by Travis Janes and an RBI single by David Vinsky to make it 4-3.
• The Warriors grabbed the lead back with three more in the home half to make it 6-4, but a big five spot by Northwood in the top of the third would put Northwood back in front 9-6. Kyle Ziegler had an RBI double and Vinsky plated a run on an RBI single, but the damaging blow of the frame was a three run big fly from Brooks Ullery to right center, the first of the season for Ullery.
• Northwood's offense stayed hot with two more in the fourth on a two RBI double by Ziegler and two in the fifth, also on a two RBI double, this one by Javier Martinez, ballooning the lead to 13-6.
• Wayne State scored one run in three consecutive innings from the fifth to the seventh to try and stay within striking distance, but the Timberwolves grasped a stranglehold on the lead with five more in the top of the seventh to make it 18-9 after seven.
• In that five run seventh inning, Ryan McClelland, Javier Martinez, and Kyle Ziegler all had RBI base knocks, while the other runs came in to score on Wayne State miscues.
• One in the eighth on Pulver's second home run of the game and one more in the ninth on a McClelland RBI single brought the run total to 20, the highest on the season.
• The Warriors sprinkled in two runs in the home half of the ninth to eclipse double digits, but Northwood held on easily for the lopsided 20-11 victory.

• After taking three of four from Wayne State, Northwood is in sole possession of first place in the GLIAC. Wayne State falls to third in the conference as Walsh moves to second at 14-4.
• Daniel Pulver joins Connor Foley as Timberwolves with multi-homer games this season.
