RECAP: Northwood baseball split a pair of games against Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (February 19), with the Chargers taking game one 7-3 and the Timberwolves winning the nightcap 10-8.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (SEVEN INNINGS)

  • Myles Beale continued his hot start to the season right away in the top of the first, leading the game off with a solo home run to put the Timberwolves up 1-0.
  • Hillsdale got a run-scoring triple in the bottom of the third to tie the game 1-1.
  • Northwood went back on top in the fourth on an Evan Wiegand RBI single to make the score 2-1.
  • The fifth and sixth innings proved to be key to the Chargers win, as Hillsdale took the lead for good in the fifth with three runs to go up 4-2.
  • NU cut the lead to one in the top of the sixth thanks to an Alex Jarboe pinch-hit run-scoring double that cut the HC lead to 4-3.
  • The Chargers kept their bats hot in the seventh, plating three more runs to go up 7-3.
  • Northwood got one back in the seventh on a Rhett Evans RBI groundout but were unable to get any closer.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • Northwood got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning, jumping out to a 3-0 lead three batters into the game. Jacob Rybicki connected on a three-run homer to give the Timberwolves the early lead.
  • Hillsdale responded in a big way in the bottom of the second, bringing home seven runs in to go up 7-3 after two innings.
  • NU came right back in the top of the third inning with three runs of their own, starting with an Evans RBI fielder's choice.
  • Khale Showers then cut the lead to one with a two-run single that made the score 7-6.
  • Northwood then tied the game in the top of the fourth on a Magno RBI single.
  • NU took the lead in the sixth with another three-run rally. After a throwing error made the score 8-7, Magno came through with a two-run double that put Northwood on top 10-7.
  • Hillsdale got one back in the sixth to get within two at 10-8.
  • The Chargers loaded the bases in the ninth but were held off the board by Cam Schuelke, who pitched the final 7 1/3 innings to earn his first Northwood victory.
