RECAP: Baseball splits a home double header against Saginaw Valley Saturday (May 7), taking an 11-2 win in game one before falling in a tough 12-8 contest in 10 innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (SEVEN INNINGS)

  • The Timberwolves offense started the game strong with three runs in the bottom of the first. A Myles Beale RBI double gave NU the 1-0 lead.
  • A 2-run single by Matt Magno put Northwood up 3-0.
  • The Cardinals drove in two runs in the top of the third to put it at 3-2.
  • Khale Showers hit a two-out, two-run double to strengthen the NU lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning.
  • Rhett Evans the plated Joey Johnston a run scoring single in the fourth to put the score at 6-2.
  • Northwood broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five more runs.
  • Showers added another RBI with a single through the left side to drive in Jacob Rybicki.
  • NU took advantage of a throwing error and a wild pitch to add two more runs.
  • RBI singles by Blake Salamon and David Jeffers rounded out the scoring in the inning as the Timberwolves earned the 11-2 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • The game was scoreless before SVSU took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
  • A Carson Longstreth single to left field brought in two runs for Northwood in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Saginaw Valley evened the score with an RBI double in the top of the fifth.
  • The Timberwolves added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joey Johnston drove in David Jeffers and Jacob Rybicki with a single to center field to go up 4-2.
  • Northwood extended their lead to 7-2 in exciting fashion thanks to a two-out, three-run homerun by Khale Showers in the sixth.
  • The Cardinals responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to get within 7-4.
  • The Timberwolves wasted a chance to extend their lead win the bottom of the seventh, failing to score after having runners on second and third with one out.
  • SVSU put the score at 7-5 with one run in the top of the eighth.
  • NU again had a chance to add insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. But the Cardinals held Northwood scoreless again.
  • Saginaw Valley tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth.
  • The Saginaw offense continued in extra innings, plating five runs in the tenth to go up 12-7.
  • Northwood got one in the bottom of the inning on a Beale sacrifice fly but got no closer.
