RECAP: Northwood baseball opened its 2023 season with a pair of wins at Hawaii Pacific, earning a 7-2 win in game one before taking game two 11-4 Thursday (February 16)

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • Freshman Caden Duryea got Northwood on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI triple to bring home Blake Salamon.
  • David Jeffers followed with an sacrifice fly that scored Duryea to make the score 3-0.
  • Matt Magno made it 3-0 in the top of the sixth with NU's first home run of the season.
  • The Sharks hit a homer in the sixth and plated an unearned run in the seventh to get within one at 3-2.
  • NU came through in the ninth with four runs, starting with a Ben Clark RBI single to score Myles Beale.
  • Duryea brought home a pair with an RBI single to make the score 6-2.
  • Jacob Rybicki rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly that brought home Duryea.
  • Hawaii Pacific loaded the bases in the ninth, but Hunter McShane retired the final two batters to close out the victory.
  • Derek Clark started his junior season strong on the hill, allowing one run in eight innings of work for his 14th career victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (SEVEN INNINGS)

  • Hawaii Pacific got the scoring going in game two with a run in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.
  • Northwood went on top with a clutch two-out hit by Jeffers. His two-run triple brought home Josh Getz and Ben Clark to put the Timberwolves on top 2-1.
  • The Sharks responded right away with a run to tie the score 2-2 heading to the third.
  • NU came through with a five runs in the third, with all of the runs coming with two outs. Rhett Evans got the scoring going with a solo home run.
  • Beale then came home on an error, which was followed by a Ben Clark RBI single that made the score 5-2.
  • Getz followed with a run-scoring triple to bring home Ben Clark and push the lead to four.
  • Jeffers then finished the rally with an RBI single that gave Northwood a 7-2 lead.
  • HPU got two back in the top of the third to send the game to the fourth with Northwood leading 7-4.
  • Northwood came up with another two-out rally in the sixth. After the opening two batters were retired, Solomon came through with a three-run homer that pushed the NU lead to 10-4.
  • Rybicki used his speed to make the score 11-4 in the top of the seventh. He scored all the way from first on a single from Magno.
  • After giving up four runs in the first three innings of the game, Jayden Dentler allowed just two baserunners over his final three innings to earn the win.
