RECAP: Northwood baseball splits a pair against Walsh Saturday afternoon (April 29), dropping game one 7-3 before bouncing back with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • Rhett Evans got the Northwood offense started in the bottom of the first. An RBI single through the left side scored Matt Magno for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Cavaliers drove in one run in the top of the third to tie the score.
  • An RBI single by Blake Salamon brought home Jacob Rybicki. With the next at bat, Evans drove added another single to score Magno, as NU went up 3-1.
  • The key inning of the game came in the fifth, when Walsh drove in four runs on five hits to take the 5-3 lead.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Cavaliers plated the two final runs of the contest for the 7-3 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (SEVEN INNINGS)

  • A solo homerun for the Cavaliers gave them the 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Salamon responded with a solo homerun of his own to tie the game. This was his 17th homerun of the season, adding to his single-season school record.
  • Walsh added one run in the third to make the score 2-1.
  • Rybicki began the bottom of the third with a double to left center and going on to steal third.
  • Magno followed with a double to left center to plate Rybicki.
  • Evans then came just short of a homerun, bringing in Magno with an RBI double to left field to claim the 3-2 advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth, Walsh added one run on two hits to tie the score once again.
  • The Timberwolves started the bottom of the fifth in exciting fashion thanks to back-to-back solo bombs to left field by Carson Longstreth and Magno.
  • Salamon then hit a missile to center field to reach first. He reached home with another deep double from Evans to give NU their third run of the inning, as they took the 6-3 lead.
  • Zach Abbey and the Timberwolf defense held Walsh scoreless for the final three innings as Northwood won the contest 6-3.
