Walters works primarily with the catchers and the hitters while also being heavily involved with recruiting, player development, and administrative responsibilities.

In Walters' time in Midland, Northwood has gone 98-71-1 overall. The Timberwolves have reached the NCAA Regionals in each of the three full seasons he has coached.

The Timberwolves turned in another successful season in 2022, going 31-23-1 overall and 15-9 in the GLIAC. Northwood was ranked No. 1 in the Midwest region in the opening poll from the NCAA and spent a pair of weeks in the top position. NU reached the NCAA Regionals and earned a dramatic 10-5 comeback win over Quincy in the opening round. Northwood had three athletes earn All-Region and nine players claim All-GLIAC honors.

Picked to finish sixth in the GLIAC Preseason poll, Northwood went 29-17 overall, 18-10 in the GLIAC in 2021. NU finished one game out of first in the conference standings and reached the semifinals of the Midwest Regionals. The team set a school record with 60 home runs while finishing the season with the fourth-highest win percentage all-time at Northwood.

During the 2019 season, Walters helped the Timberwolves finish the year with 33 wins, the third-most in program history. Northwood also reached the NCAA Regional Tournament for the third time in school history.

Prior to Northwood, Walters was a member of the Alma College coaching staff under Jake Sabol for two seasons where he also worked with the catchers and the hitters. He was also an assistant coach for the North Adams SteepleCats, a member of the NECBL, during the summer of 2018.

Walters played collegiately at Alma College from 2012-2016.  A four-year letter winner for the Scots, Walters helped lead Alma to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2016, garnering 1st-Team All-MIAA honors as a senior, hitting .353 with 37 RBI, which is second most all-time in a single season at Alma. Walters also lead the Scots in hits with 48, while starting all 43 games behind the plate. After the conclusion of the 2016 season, he was awarded the Team Captain Award and the Team MVP Award, voted on by his teammates and coaches.

Following his junior season, Walters was named 2nd-Team All-MIAA with a .324 batting average. Doug was also awarded the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year Award from the Alma College Athletic Department for his 2015 campaign.

Prior to Alma, Walters played for the Ann Arbor American Legion summer team that competed in tournaments nationwide. Doug also helped lead Aristeo Construction to a Lansing League championship in the summer of 2017 as well as guiding the Flint Mustangs to a Flint League Championship in the summer of 2016.

From Brighton, Walters graduated from Brighton High School in 2012. He was voted team captain as a senior and led the program to its first KLAA title while also reaching the D-1 Quarterfinals. Throughout high school, he worked in the after school program teaching and developing young children in various sports, such as baseball, basketball, and football.

Walters graduated from Alma College in 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in English. He currently resides in Midland with his fiancé, Ana.
