Football Falls At No. 6 Ferris State 40-3

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The Northwood University football team dropped a 40-3 contest to No. 6 Ferris State Saturday night (September 12)

Northwood is now 1-1 overall and on the season. The game was the season-opener for the Bulldogs.

After both teams failed to score in the opening 10 minutes of the game, Ferris State got on the board late in the first. FSU went 83 yards on two pass plays to open up a 7-0 lead.

Ferris State made it 10-0 early in the second, but the Timberwolves responded with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. A 62-yard pass from Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) to Dan Richmond (Hartland, Mich.) set the Timberwolves up in the red zone. Northwood was unable to get in the endzone, but David Knudsen (St. Charles, Ill./West) connected on a 30-yard field goal to make the score 10-3. That capped a seven-play, 57-yard drive that took up 2:20.

The biggest play of the opening half came with less than five minutes remaining in the half. After the NU defense forced a Bulldog punt, Northwood muffed the punt return. FSU eventually picked up the loose ball in the end zone, making the score 16-3. That proved to be the final points of the half.

At the break, Ferris State held a 318-150 yards in total offense. The Bulldogs also held a 14-7 edge in first downs. Both teams had one turnover in the opening 30 minutes.

The Bulldogs put the game away with a strong third quarter. FSU had two touchdowns and a field goal to go up 33-3 heading to the fourth.  Trailing 40-3 late in the game, Northwood drove inside the FS 10 but turned it over on downs.

For the game, Ferris State finished with a 595-242 edge in total yards. FSU had 320 yards passing and 275 yards rushing. Northwood finished with 242 total yards, 156 passing and 86 rushing.

Morris finished with 156 yards passing to lead the Northwood offense. Michael Fisher (Rochester, Mich./Adams) led the defensive effort with 13 tackles.

Northwood will travel to McKendree next Saturday (September 19). That game will kick off at 1 p.m.
