RECAP: Northwood drops a 52-7 contest to No. 3 Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (September 29).
INSIDE THE GAME
- Grand Valley State wasted little time on their first drive. Racking up four consecutive first downs, a three-yard rushing touchdown capped the Lakers' five-play drive and gave them a 7-0 lead nearly seven minutes into the game.
- Receiving promising field position at the Northwood 50-yard line on their second drive, GVSU took 47 seconds to rack up their second TD of the day. A 48-yard passing play brought the visitors down to the two-yard line, setting up another score to make it 14-0 with 5:52 left in the first.
- The Lakers relied on the big play again on their fourth drive early in the second. A 43-yard completion set up an ensuing 23-yard pass that found the end zone again, extending Grand Valley's lead to 21-0 5:34 into the second.
- Looking to go into the half with a bigger spread, GVSU went back to work later in the second. On a drive highlighted by a 44-yard pass that brought them deep into Northwood territory, the Lakers capped their journey with a 15-yard toss that would give them a 28-0 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half.
- The Timberwolves were able to get on the board before the end of the half on a miracle touchdown. Driving 73 yards down the field in 3:53, with four seconds left quarterback Christian Martinez rolled to his right and fired a pass that was deflected on its way to the end zone before landing in the hands of Roq Williams for a 39-yard touchdown. This made it 28-7 and gave Northwood some momentum going into the half.
- GVSU grabbed the momentum back with authority in the third. Taking 5:50 off the clock in a 12-play, 90-yard drive, Grand Valley converted on a 4th-and-Goal opportunity from the one-yard line, extending the lead to 35-7.
- The Lakers defense kept Northwood off the board the rest of the way and put up 17 more points to close out the victory.
