Men's Basketball Loses At Malone 84-77

The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped an 84-77 contest at Malone Saturday afternoon (December 14).

The loss snaps the Timberwolves six-game winning streak.  NU falls to 7-3 overall, 3-1 in the GLIAC.  Malone improves to 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC.

Northwood led early in the game by four points, but Malone was the better team for the rest of the first half.  The Pioneers eventually led 42-31 at the break, which matched their biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes. Malone shot 46.7 percent from the floor in the half (14-30) while holding the Timberwolves to a 35.5 percent clip (11-31).

The Timberwolves came out fast in the second half, scoring 14 of the first 20 points to cut the Malone lead down to three. The score was 55-51 with 12:54 remaining when the Pioneers went on what proved to be the critical run of the contest. Malone scored the next 10 points in just over three minutes to extend their lead back to 14. Northwood got no closer than six the rest of the way.

A strong offensive second half for Northwood was not enough.  The Timberwolves shot 59.4 percent from the floor (19-32) and 50.0 percent from 3-point range (7-14). For the game, Northwood finished at 47.6 percent from the floor (30-63). Malone ended at 47.4 percent (27-57). The Pioneers won the game at the foul line where the out-scored Northwood 19-8.  Malone also connected on 11 3-pointers to eight for the Timberwolves.

Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) led the way for Northwood, finshing with 20 points. Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./Southlake) had a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Darvin Ham (Saginaw, Mich./Bridgeport) added 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half. The star of the game proved to be Malone's Isiah Elliott, who scored 37 points for the Pioneers.

Northwood will now head to Hawaii for a pair.  The Timberwolves will face Chaminade Thursday night (December 19). Game time is set for 12:30 a.m. (ET).
