Men's Basketball Defeats Calvin 101-94

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 101-94 win over Calvin Tuesday evening (November 17).

The game was a regular season game for Northwood but an exhibition contest for Calvin.

The Knights got off to a strong start in the game, leading 43-36 over the Timberwolves with 4:30 remaining in the first half. It was at that point that the Timberwolves responded with a run, scoring 16 of the next 17 points to open up an eight point lead. The score at the break was 52-45 in favor of Northwood. Both teams shot well in the opening half – Calvin shot 50.0 percent overall (16-32) and 58.3 percent from 3-point range (7-12) while Northwood shot 51.4 percent overall (19-37) and 52.9 percent from 3-point range (9-17).

Northwood stayed ahead of Calvin the entire second half, but the Timberwolves was unable to put the Knights away. Northwood led by 12 points early in the second half, which proved to be their biggest lead of the game. The margin remained between 10 and three points until the final 2:30 of the game. Both teams ended up scoring 49 points in the second half, but did it in very different ways. NU shot 63.3 percent from the floor (19-30) while making two 3-pointers while Calvin shot 41.9 percent (18-43) but made 10 3-pointers.

For the game, Northwood finished at 56.7 percent from the floor (38-67) and made 42.3 percent from 3-point range (11-26). Calvin ended up at 45.3 percent overall (34-75) but made 17 3-pointers in the game (17-31 – 54.8 percent).

Five Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill). He finished with 27 points, nine assists and five rebounds. Jones went 8-13 from the floor and 5-6 from 3-point range. Freshman Zach Allread (West Bloomfield, Mich.) came off the bench to score 19 points and five rebounds, while Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind) had 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. PJ Weaver (Dayton, Ohio/Meadowdale) and Nick Spitzley (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Northwood will travel to Cedarville Saturday (November 21). Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
