Men's Basketball Drops 87-80 Contest At Walsh

CANTON, OHIO – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 87-80 contest to Walsh Thursday night (December 10).

Northwood is now 5-3 overall, 2-1 in the GLIAC. Walsh stands at 4-2 overall, 3-0 in the GLIAC.

Walsh came out fast in the opening half but Northwood finished strong. The Cavaliers opened up a 27-13 lead less than nine minutes in and led 33-23 with 6:14 remaining in the first half. That is when the Timberwolves responded, scoring the next 18 points to open up a 41-33 lead with 1:22 left in the first half. The score ended up being 41-34 at the break. Northwood shot 45.7 percent from the floor (16-35) while Walsh ended up at 42.9 percent (15-35).

Much like the start of the game, Walsh came out strong to start the second half. The Cavaliers took a 65-56 lead with 8:21 remaining in the game when Northwood fought back. The Timberwolves scored 12 of the next 16 points to make the score 69-68 with 5:40 remaining.  Walsh got back up by eight at 77-69 with less than three minutes to go only to see Northwood respond to cut the lead to one at 77-76 with 1:44 left. The Cavaliers connected on a key 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down that made it a four point game in the final minute. NU got no closer than that the rest of the way.

For the game, Northwood ended up at 42.9 percent from the floor (30-70) while Walsh finished at 49.2 percent (31-63). Both teams ended up with nine 3-pointers and 12 turnovers.

NU was led by senior guard Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill), who finished with 25 points, six assists and five rebounds. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) had 17 points, while Jermaine Myers (Ojax, Ontario/Fordham) totaled 13 points.

Northwood will face Malone Saturday (December 13) at 3 p.m.
