Men's Basketball Falls To Michigan Tech 61-60

MIDLAND, MI – The Northwood University men's basketball team lost a tough 61-60 contest to Michigan Tech Huskies Thursday (January 28).

Northwood is now 10-9, 6-7 in GLIAC play. Michigan Tech improves to 7-10, with an identical 6-7 record in conference play.

Halfway through the first stanza, each team went on a respective run. Tech started off strong, going up 10-2 to open the game. The Timberwolves came back with a flourish of their own, netting 14 consecutive points to take a 19-14 lead. NU eventually took a 39-30 lead at the break, thanks in large part to winning the battle on the boards (24-16) and bench points (22-5).

Michigan Tech chipped away at the lead throughout the second half, eventually tying the game 47-47 with just under ten minutes to play. MTU led by three in the final seconds when the Timberwolves went to the foul line for three free throws. NU made the first two and missed the third, but got the offensive rebound. A final attempt at the buzzer was no good, giving the win to Michigan Tech.

For the contest, Northwood shot 40.4% (23-57) to Michigan Tech's 44% (22-50). The difference was at the charity stripe for both teams, with the Timberwolves finishing 53.8% (7-13) and the Huskies netting 75% (12-16). Northwood out-rebounded the Huskies 37-29 for the game.

Northwood was led by Jermaine Myers (Ajax, Ontario) who hit four of the five three-point shots to finish with 16 points. He added three assists and four rebounds in the loss. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) had 15 points to go along with four steals.

The Timberwolves will return to action on Saturday (January 30) against Northern Michigan. Tip off for the game will be Saturday at 3 p.m.
